Carrie's Fish Cakes

“I have recently taken up BLW with my 8 month old and thought I would pass on my fishcakes recipe for those who would like it – as it has gone down a storm…

Cook in ovenproof dish white fish (haddock/cod etc) in milk until turns opaque (check there are no bones) Gas mark 5 approx 10-15 mins
Boil some potatos and mash, no butter /milk needed. Finely chop some herbs, flat leaf parsley is good – but it is up to you.
Add fish and mash together, beat an egg and add small amount to mash to bind
Flour your hands and take small amounts of the mixture to make small patties.
Dip each patty in the beaten egg and dip in bread crumbs (stale or oven dried if possible).
Place on lightly oiled baking tray and bake in oven gas mark 5 for about 10 minutes or until lightly golden

They have been fantastic, I put them straight in the freezer to keep fresh and take what I need as and when….Enjoy!”

    I’ve heard people use coconut milk instead of egg to bind, hope this helps x

    Do you cook them before you freeze them?

      wouldn’t have thought so, Connie. I’d put them on a tray on some greaseproof paper, freeze them, then take them off the tray and just whack them in a tupperware or freezer bag for later.

    Very tasty! We used salmon fillets instead (which does make it a bit disappointing when a lot ends up on the floor / in the bib!) but he did seem to pick them up quite well and definitely enjoyed them!

    i’m making these now!! just wondered tho, i bought haddock put it in the freezer, defrosted it to make these, so when its cooked can i refreeze or not???

      this link does seem to suggest it would be fine, assuming you’ve handled the frozen fish correctly. (whatever that means, presumably that you’ve not left it sitting out for a week and let the cat lick it).

    Made these twice for my son now. He loves them! First time with cod and sweetcorn. Second time with salmon and red pepper. Bit messy to make but worth it as I make a batch and freeze them

    my baby has a dairy intolerance, do you have another suggestion for how I can cook the fish? Soy milk or water maybe? thanks :)

      water, i’m sure, would be lovely, but perhaps not too much, so seal up the dish with foil and ‘steam’ the fish.

    I’ve never heard of cooking fish in milk before – how much milk do you use?

      oh, it’s DELICIOUS. we used to get plain haddock poached in milk and a bit of butter when we were kids… with mashed potato and peas. Now I’m craving. Just enough to cover the fish, really, in as small a pan as you can manage, you don’t want it swimming. (funnily enough).

    Not to sound stupid but formula or cows milk because i thought keep them off cows milk til 1

      Unless you’re particularly worried about allergies and whatnot, you’re fine to use cow’s milk after six months for meals etc, the thing you can’t do until one is use it as their main food source, iykwim?

    You can use coconut milk instead of cow’s milk if you like too, yummo and dairy-free. My son has CMPI :)

    Can’t wait to make these… Just a tip from making other fish dishes: you can poach fish in only one or two minutes, covered in milk, in the microwave. Saves time and keeps me saner (my cat goes mental when I cook fish!).

    so, I’m in the US….what does “gas mark 5” mean? I have a gas oven/stove, but am unfamiliar with that setting….

    Going to make these now! The Hubby wont eat fish, but hopefully the baby will love these so we can gang up on him together and have fish more often in a few years time!
    And Anna – Gas 5 is supposed to be about 190 deg Celsius (so 375 F)

    Hello- when you freeze these – do you make them fully ie with the breadcrumbs on? Or freeze them without breadcrumbs?
