Baby 'eats' everything except the food...

Oh my God, look! Your baby is eating broccoli!
Feel free to boast about your child here.

Baby 'eats' everything except the food...

Postby MonsterMunching » 09 Oct 2016, 07:30

Hi,

I joined a couple of weeks ago when my son was 5.5 months. In the last two weeks, we've given him a few different fruits and veg sticks, porridge and rice cakes but not every meal and not stressing about it.
Everything goes in his mouth, as is normal, books, clothes...anything he can get his hands on. But he often ignores the food. Or he pushes it all around his tray and doesn't try and put it in his mouth. When he does put something in his mouth, he usually moves it around a bit and then most of the time pushes it out again. Occasionally something has gone through, as I've seen a (very) few bits of broccoli or other 'substance' in his poos, but I'm pretty sure he's hardly eating anything.

I'm not worried by this at the moment, though I"m quite glad we started a bit early as I think I would be worried if this was a couple of weeks after 6 months and it was the same situation. I am worried that he doesn't even seem to try some things, and that he just pushes it back out again a lot of the time.

I've got the Gill Rapley book and I'm almost certain this is normal. But could someone reassure me, and suggest whether I should keep offering, or stop for a week or two and just continue breastfeeding/offer purees?
Many thanks!

Yup, totally normal. If he's enjoying playing then there's no reason to stop; more practice will help him get the idea. It may also encourage him if you eat the same things as him, so he knows they're food. But every baby gets there in their own time - many BLW babies start to eat in earnest around 8-10 months, or later - so just relax and let him learn at his pace.

Yep, exactly as Lily said - totally normal and just keep doing as you are doing. My son didn't really start eating until about 11 months whereas it took my daughter about two weeks to 'get' it!

Thanks for replies and the reassurance!
I had newfound confidence after reading them this morning, and we had rice/oat cakes with guacamole on, red and yellow pepper and chicken. Fajita baby style. It went down a treat. I think a, it was much more interesting than a random bit of broccoli, and b, thanks.to the advice here, we were eating it together. So thank you again!

That sounds really tasty, I'd eat that!
Just to echo what the others said, my Newt sat with us at dinner every day once she was six months. She was happy, she played with her food... but not once did it go near her mouth. That didn't happen until she was closer to ten months. The whole time, she continued breastfeeding with the frequency and enthusiasm of a newborn.
