Help - what to call our new room?

Postby Cofa's Tree » 11 Apr 2016, 20:19

**Totally self-indulgent post warning**
We live in a house with a front-to-back k-room and living room with the stairs going up in between the middle of them. We're having a new extension built across the width of the back of the house, with the existing back door and k-room window removed to create an 'L' shaped space.

The new room has a downstairs toilet, two sets of French doors, vaulted ceiling with two velux windows, with a set of sliding doors between the new room and the living room, and it will hold a dining table and a small sofa seating area. But we're stuck with what to call the new room!

It's not a 'family room' as it isn't (hopefully) a play space (that's in the living room), the 'back room' is too reminiscent of the Victorian terrace I moved here from, but we don't want to carry on calling it 'the extension'! We were jokingly calling it the 'garden room' because it literally used to be our garden, but that's just too pretentious isn't it? Maybe 'family room' does fit the bill, now I'm reading this back...

So I ask of the collective forum brain - what IS our new room called?!

Boring, but 'dining room'?
But if it's going to be a room you use with the garden in summer, I reckon you can get away with garden room :)

Reminds me of my step mum who's from the north east, in her house, which ever room you weren't in (out of 2 living type rooms) was 'the rum'!

I think an l-shaped room can literally be referred to as an ell. We have a room in our house that just referred to as 'the long room', so a descriptive like garden room seems totally fine to me!

I like the Garden Room. Not pretentious (IMO).

We call the little room off our kitchen (really just the other side of the counter) the sun room because it gets lovely afternoon sun. So I don't think garden room is pretentious.

In Australia it would probably be a lounge room if you want an 'official' room name, I'd probably call it the end room or something like that.

Oh, I kroomed again, but the gist of it was that I don't think garden room is pretentious. Over here we use living and lounge rooms interchangeably, but I might also use end room. We have a 'sun room' that is really just the other half of the kroom and not a separate room at all...

I think you should actually call it the "k-room" in honour of the forum.
You can differentiate between that and the room where you actually do the food preparation by calling the other room by its proper name which begins with k. :mona

Lynn. Call it Lynn. For Lynn Reid Banks who wrote the L shaped room.

Although West Wing might be more obviously funny.
