In all honesty (based on my own experience) the NHS didn't want to know because he was putting on weight and supposedly feeding well. It was diagnosed at birth by the midwife. Then again by my community mw, and again by the HV. All said no need to snip but if it became a problem later, he would be offered speech therapy at 3 yrs!? I also spoke to two speech therapist friends of mine. One said if it was her child and the NHS wouldn't snip, she would go private. The other said she would probably leave it if it was her child.
My own situation was complicated further because DS had terrible wind, reflux and an egg allergy which hadn't been diagnosed. He was terribly unhappy and i wanted to eliminate anything causing him unhappiness. We got it snipped privately at 7 weeks. I don't regret it. He could immediately poke his tongue out of his mouth, feeding was easier and I didn't need to worry about future feeding or speech issues.
Having said this, it didn't make him a happier baby. But it made me feel like I had solved one possible problem. It was quick and cost about £170. The private doc we saw said it was definitely a case for snipping. We didn't go through the GP. We just looked online for the nearest TT specialist and made an appointment.
