Because BLW isn't just for lentil-weavers. Some of us like to piddle about with bits of felt and sticky-backed plastic as well.

Upcycle vintage pillowcases wwyd?

Postby Scozzie » 30 Jun 2013, 05:30

Going through my fabric stash, I've discovered two white pillowcases that used to belong to my great-aunt, which I rescued on a whim years ago from being turned into rags.

They're very fine cotton with a ruffle around the edge and for some reason they sang to me. And I've just discovered that they're *entirely* hand made - every seam, buttonhole, tiny detail... all sewn by hand, probably by my grandmother. The stitching is immaculate.

They're pretty dull as pillowcases, and I'm not a big fan of ruffles around my face... but it's a crying shame not to use them for something. And I'd like to conserve some of the hand-stitching if I can. Cause I'm a bit sentimental.

Thoughts so far are a very simple skirt or dress for the Poppet (there are so many patterns about, easyish option) with maybe coloured trims or applique, maybe using the buttonhole bits as the hem and put ribbon through.... but do you creative geniuses have any other ideas?

I'd probably try to turn it into something that would last a bit longer than a skirt...like a blanket for a doll or something decorative for the house. Just because I'd hate to have to put it away once it had been grown out of if it was a skirt.

Could it be made into mini bunting triangles?

What about seeing them into cushion covers for a couch cushion? You could lose the ruffly end...

Thanks guys, all good ideas. Yep good point Allium, it would be a shame to use for only a short while, I hadn't thought of that. Hmmm. Will do a bit more pondering...

Have you thought of what you will do with them yet?
