Treat as nut allergy

For the label-readers amongst us, a place to marvel at food manufacturers' ability to add milk powder to everything.

Treat as nut allergy

Postby SevilleOranges » 28 Jan 2012, 20:12

DD has had an allergic reaction to some hummus that I made - Doc reactions it would be the tahini in it... and to treat as a nut allergy - silly question but what do i do? I have no idea about food allergies or the best place to go for advice.

It happened on Fri and I literally panicked.... once it faded I was ok but it came back - it was fairly close to bedtime and I just kept thinking about my sister who has had a reaction recently (never had one before) and it wasn't found til next day and alot of swelling?

I really dont want a repeat unless we have allergist referral from docs. I've been advised to take a food diary then in a months time they will refer me.

Thanks for advice in advance

At the risk of stating the obvious, tahina is made from sesame seeds not nuts. Sesame is a reasonably common allergen, although I'm not sure what the likelihood is of it occurring concurrently with nut allergy. Still, if your doctor has warned you to be careful, that seems sensible.

Not sure if it helps but the boy has sesame allergy but not nuts, I guess your doc is being ultra careful. Just make sure they test for nuts as well when you get to the specialist so you know one way or the other.

Thanks ladies. And thank you for the link.

Yeah I think he is being cautious as I am sure she's had things like nuts before ie she's stolen DS's nuts from bowl and gummed them, and I'm sure she's had peanut butter well a little she threw it and I took that as an ' I dont want that mum" reaction.

Hopefully we'll be able to get an allergist appointment too as she's got pretty bad ezcema which I'm sure is food related . . . .argggghhh the joys of kids hey!! ???!!!
