appetite for a big camping meet up?

appetite for a big camping meet up?

Postby biccytoria » 30 Jul 2012, 11:03

I'm just back from another forum camping meet and was wondering whether there was an appetite for a similar BLW meet, and whether there were people willing to help organise it?

The meet was at a Scout camp near Banbury. This year there were over 450 adults and children, a huge undertaking which involved a hired marquee, insurance, goodybags, etc. etc. I can't imagine a BLW being quite that big/organised/professional but it would be interesting to see what others opinions would be.

I paid around £37 for two nights camping, with lunch on sat included. Everyone fended for themselves for other meals, people donated tea/coffee/cakes and a 'cafe' operated in the hut. Individuals volunteered to run some activities, which included face painting, crochet workshops, foraging walk, etc.

It was so fab to be able to let the kids run around without worrying about them too much, knowing that everyone would look out for the kids around them, and chatting with people that I'd 'met' online and known for several years in some cases.

Possible or too complicated/too much hard work?

Oo yes, was at the nm one? I would be up for it and would volunteer to help organise, we are back in oct for three years...
I think the main issue would be getting payment as most of these places would need a deposit at the time of booking. Definately possible, and would be fab if people volunteered to do stuff there.

it was, yes!

Payment wise, booking was well ahead in advance but the date was announced in December, ticket sales started in April, so they either didn't have to put a deposit down, or someone paid for it out of their own pocket.

There was an early bird discount for the first month, then ticket sales closed a month and a half before the camp itself.

I like the idea too. I did half think about the NM one but wasn't convinced (don't know everyone there all that well, really) and DH really wasn't keen - but I 'know' all you lot loads better.

I could possibly help with some bits of organisation.

I would love to, and providing next week's camping holiday isn't a disaster, I could probably persuade DP.
It'll take a mammoth effort of organising though. We talked about a BLW holiday in Wales (near salj, I think?) and even agreed a venue and discussed dates... but then it got forgotten about! :(

It would need to be school summer holidays, I think, both for those with older children, and to up the chances of the weather being good.

As to where, somewhere that is easy to get to for most people! Using a scout/guide camp seems to be a good idea - normal campsites usually have issues with large groups and would probably be more expensive.

Are most people likely to drive there or would somewhere close to a train station be needed?

Fullhouse, I remembered that attempts had been made in the past (I remember a spa trip being attempted) so yes, if we do decide then we need the band of volunteers to ensure that it happens, hence the 'dipping my toe into the water' post

FWIW I went without DH this weekend. It was hard work but other DH's helped me with the tent, and there was definitely a village childcare thing going on, so it wasn't quite as hard work as I had expected.

I'd be up for coming, but realistically don't have much time to offer for organising.
would need it to be train-able though...

Yes, there was a lot of discussion about it here. DIM is on record as being up for camping with a 3yo and 1yo!

Not sure we'd be in. I've never been a very happy camper....

I have a three year old and a one year old, as of today! :o :o :o :o

Camping sounds fun. I would need to buy a tent though. And persuade DH that it does actually sound fun. But other than those two obstacles, we're probably good to go  like Robyn, we'd need to be able to get the train there though.
