My dairy intake is mainly butter. I have a tiny amount with cereal, butter on everything, the odd bit of cheese although lots this week, & of course vast amounts of chocolate :wink:

So maybe I don't take enough for her to really have an issue?? She does have lumpy curdy poo...

Claire, as you know we are in this situation too! I'm so pleased you are considering this. I am still I'm denial really that C is currently dairy intolerant but when I look back at the sleepless nights and frequent wakings I so wish I had headed this advice sooner.

To be honest I have cut out the cheese and that has made the significant difference. I have a bowl of cereal with semi cows milk in the morning and that is the only dairy I have most of the time. I occasionally have a couple of small chocolates now - such as celebrations which have a tiny amount of chocolate. I can also get easy with soft cheese - Philly type stuff - if used sparingly. I've reintroduced these things gradually and if I've taken it too far then C's windy tummy returns. Do watch your egg intake too!

I don't eat eggs except in cake!!

Ok well I'm going to try losing milk cheese butter & switch to dark Choc for 2 weeks.

That said she's purring nicely in my lap & I had a huge ice cream fest for lunch!

We found Oatly most acceptable for cereal, though it is rank in tea/coffee - I just switched to black Earl Grey or herbal. Pure sunflower or olive spreads both fine for sandwiches, toast etc, olive oil where you might use butter in cooking and Stork block (the hard one not the soft stuff in a tub) for baking. Oatly works fine as a substitute for milk in cooking too. All the cheese substitutes are rank....
We can't have soya either which makes bread difficult and cuts out the soya substitutes. Since half of dairy intolerant babies also react to soya I would think about cutting that too, or at least not replacing dairy with soya.
We like - hobnobs (not the choc ones sadly!) Yorkshire tea loaf, many value-range biscuits, tesco finest or Lindt 70% chocolate as treats.
As a nursing mother you need 1250mg of calcium, so you probably need a supplement. 400mg calcium widely available from supermarkets/chemist.
It's a pain, but if it makes a big difference to them it's worth it. Good luck. Jen x

A bit OT but has anyone found that giving up dairy makes them less snotty etc? I have always needed a tissue at the ready my whole life so wonder about this. I'm with B&M about butter though - might prefer to live with the snot! Sorry, TMI.

It hasn't made any difference to me, but I have the least snotty kids I know (they are still dairy-free). Neither of them have ever had antibiotics & until this week L had never missed a day's nursery through illness in 2+ yrs. I am sure it is because they are dairy free.

Spanner, my dh gets really snotty if he has too much dairy and/or sugar, so it can definitely have that reaction.

Good luck with it Claire. We were dairy free for a few years and you honestly get used to it. I hope it's the answer, or that she just grows out of it soon!

I went dairy free until about the time I started weaning, and then we were good... I found it made a big difference to cut out most dairy and be fairly careful... I found out late that my marg had dairy in it, and I had been testing him anyway with milk in tea and a slice of cheese once a week... we were never very bad though.

J was gassy, but actually crying when he passed wind, lots more spit-up, and with the ring rash/ green poop that made me start looking for issues. I was able to tolerate soy (which is good because it meant I could still have coffee... without which I would have been quite awful!)

Since there are 2 milk proteins that are bad you might find it is one and not the other if you really want to get into label reading. Might explain ice cream being okay.

For us we knew it wasn't the lactose (we had tried giving her an enzyme that helped break it down) and once we'd established 'dairy' was the problem we narrowed it down again to protein so I could eat butter (still a trace of protein but not enough to cause trouble). If you see an improvement for total elimination, you can reintroduce certain foods to test for a reaction. There may be foods containing milk that you CAN have - but be warned, it'll confuse the hell out of the in-laws!

Spanner - I cut out dairy because of post nasal drip and to be honest it didn't particularly make a difference so I've started on dairy again & I don't seem to be any worse.
My ENT actually advised me to include dairy in my diet as he considered that there was more benefit to eating dairy than cutting it out.
That said the only dairy product I used to have excessive amounts of was cheese so maybe I didn't eat enough to begin with to make a huge difference.
