Can you start toddler led eating with a 2yr old?

Oh, we're done with all that vegetable-steaming and mess, our children are cutlery-wielding, spaghetti-chomping angels... at least some of the time.

Can you start toddler led eating with a 2yr old?

I never knew about BLW so started my oldest on puréed when he was about 5 months. For a variety of reasons he is now an extremely picky eater who prefers us to feed him with our finger. I am looking for anything to get him to feed himself and to eat more variety. My sister-in-law told me about BLW and now I'm reading the book in preparation for my second son. But in the mean time is there any hope for my 2yr old? Suggestions for how to start?

Not having a 2 year old, I'm talking pure conjecture here, but what happens when you just put a selection of the food you're having in front of him and let him do his own thing? The thing that makes it easy with babies is that they are and should be getting more of their nutrition from breastmilk/formula, which option you don't have with a 2 year old, but maybe make one meal of the day a playing meal or something like that where there's no pressure to eat anything and he can muck about, taste, squish, sort, and explore food without any eating pressure?

I'm sure more experienced forummers will be along soon with more informed advice.

Hi there,

First thing I would say is that 2 year olds tend to go through really picky phases however they were weaned so don't feel you would necessarily have avoided it by blw from the start.

I think adopting a blw approach / attitude though helps stop the picky phases turning into stressful battles.

What are mealtimes like for you? What happens if you just give a selection of what you are having and let him either eat it or not?

At just turned 3 we seem to be getting less picky and more inclined to try different things (hope I haven't jinxed it now!!!) so hang in there!

There have been a few threads on here about BLW with other children. The main things I think to consider are:

* Your attitude: BLW is not about battles or stress, its about offering a healthy variety of food and trusting your child to eat what they need. Children WON'T starve themselves.

* Some people have had success with putting the food out and letting the child help themselves (although 2 might be a bit young for that). My 3 and 5 year old LOVE to help themselves from a range of fruits/salad bits to go with their main meals.

* Try and eat all together, whenever possible.

* When the little one starts BLW that will prob really help, as peer pressure can be very helpful :)
