Whole nuts - when?

Oh, we're done with all that vegetable-steaming and mess, our children are cutlery-wielding, spaghetti-chomping angels... at least some of the time.

Whole nuts - when?

Postby Lioncub's mama » 09 Dec 2012, 07:50

Just that really - when did you let you lo start chomping on whole almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts etc etc?

Thanks!

It's the last thing they can have (apart from coffee and alcohol ;) ) - I think it's about 3 they can have them. I was upset when I found out that Roo's cm had given him pistachios at 18mo ish (found out cause I fished a whole shell out of his mouth :scream)

The official advice is 5 based on the choking hazard. DD1 had her first whole nuts at 21 months, we were at a party and her cousins were eating them and she had some before I knew it and coped fine. I think the advice is quite conservative, a child who has been eating 'proper' food and knows to eat when sitting down etc is going to cope with nuts a lot better than a child who has parents who spoon feeds much longer than they need to and stuffs nuts into their face while running around.

I'd start with something that didn't have a shell though and watch out for the salt content!

I'd completely avoided them until midge was 26 months but her cousin was eating some. Midge was Offered one and I thought 'why not?!' Knowing that she has had lots of experience of proper food and different textures. We regularly have pistachios as a snack. She loves the whole process of shelling them!

TheWriggler has had some nuts, pistachios are a favourite. I figured since he always chews grapes and cherry tomatoes thoroughly and we were supervising closely (and I emphasised the "you must sit down when you're eating" rule) he should be ok. He also loves shelling them and as DP is the main nut eater around here it tends to be a daddy treat too. He was definitely over two before he had any though.

We let mouse have some from around 2 - mainly cashews as we like them in stir fry and things.
Haven't tried pistachios, aren't they usually salty?

You can get unsalted ones.

The Chooby had her first whole nuts when she was 18 months. We were at a party and they were at her height so rather than panic or try to rearrange the nibbles, I reminded her to chomp them one at a time (this was the blueberry rule a year earlier) and she was fine. Neither of my girls started eating them regularly until around 2 and always under supervision.

Thanks all! I thought that the official line was to wait until at least three or so, but remember that my nephew practically lived off walnuts when he was i think about 2 and half (he was/is a very picky eater and i think his parents were just happy to see him eating something nutritious), so wondered what others with blwed toddlers had done. Will definitely try to keep christmas nuts out of reach for this year though!

Both of mine were under 2, probably 18 - 20 months.

Both of mine were around 18 months too. Dp is the nut giver, I am too afraid to be the first. :D Noah loves cashews and Joe has always been a pistachio lover, although we always buy plain and shell them first; even now that he is 5.
