Nutella - Good or Bad?

Oh, we're done with all that vegetable-steaming and mess, our children are cutlery-wielding, spaghetti-chomping angels... at least some of the time.

Nutella - Good or Bad?

Nutella for a 16 month old. Is it good or bad?

I'd like your thoughts please.

It's very, very good. :D

I'd say a little in moderation is probably fine. :mona

I love it but my ds1 didn't get it until he was about 2, my ds2 (at 18m) is yet to have it, but as Riot said, little bit in moderation wont do any harm at all. :D

Sorry, Nutella gets a thumbs down from me. Well, actually it's a thumbs up for me personally because it's blatantly delicious, but in terms of nutritional value it's a definite thumbs down. 20g of nutella has 10.9g of sugar in it, which I'm afraid for me makes it unsuitable for littlies. The alleged nutritional value of hazelnuts and milk are better gained from buying some hazelnut butter, putting that on toast and having a glass of milk with it - there's no need to add 2 teaspoons of sugar on top. I'm sure a little every so often is probably fine, but I'd rather not.
Here's a run down of what's actually in it and what that means.

This. It's chocolate spread. I would imagine it doesn't have the greatest nutritional content but William (15mths) has had it a few times.

But I'm pretty relaxed about what my children eat so not the best person to comment.

Oxfam make a milk chocolate hazlenut spread too, I wonder how their ingredients compare?

And considering it's similar in sugar content to jam? Don't most kids eat jam occasionally? I'm probably not the best person to comment because when I find a brand of something DS can have, I tend to just go with it. Soy products are sweet because they have to be.

True, and honey (MJ's preferred option if he can get his hands on it) is about 80% sugar. I prefer to avoid sugary things altogether. We do have jam and honey in the house, but he is offered peanut butter or vegemite for toast, or bananas &/ sultanas on his cereal.
And I don't eat jam and honey by the spoonful  :mona

it's all good. a bit of sugar at breakfast makes you last longer throughout the day. and it's low GI.

I'd say it depends how much they have. Like most people say a little bit now and then aint gonna hurt em. Personally I would'nt give it to a 16 month old but then I didn't my DS chocolate til he was nearer two years old.

Everything in moderation, if it is something you regularly eat yourselves then he is going to want to have some eventually. There are worse sins in the world than giving a child over one chocolate spread, as long as it isn't every meal every day. We don't eat nutella (because I love it so much a jar never lasts longer than 24 hours so it's best to avoid it) but we do have pain au chocolat sometimes at the weekend which is probably comparable on the nutritional front.

My boys have never had it because I can not have it in the house. But if you can be restrained and have it every now and again it will do you no harm but I think it is defiantly a treat the fact that it's 50% sugar negates any of the health benefits of the 2 hazelnuts per portion!!

I'm in the same camp as LB2001 - can't have it in the house because I'd eat it too quickly so my kids have never had it. As a child it was a holiday food when we were in France/Italy we never had it at home. But in reality the sugar content is not hugely differdnt to jams/honey. Therd are other good stuffs that I worry more about....swuadh being one of them for some reason and Haribo type stuff.
