Austrian Smoked Cheese?

Oh, we're done with all that vegetable-steaming and mess, our children are cutlery-wielding, spaghetti-chomping angels... at least some of the time.

Austrian Smoked Cheese?

Postby FestiveTidings » 12 Apr 2012, 15:31

Roo has decided that he enjoys Austrian Smoked Cheese (the kind that's packed in a sausage shape) after tasting some from my plate. When I mentioned it to my mum though she said that she didn't think he should be having any - because it was smoked. Am I missing something or is it ok to give it to him? He's 14 months and I think he's bored with mature cheddar! :)

Ooh. I read the subject and it brought back brill memories. My brother and I lived on moon cheese when we were kids (so called because mum cut it in circles and if you took a bite out it looked like a crescent moon). Happy days. :D

Ahem. Back to the question... I see no reason why he shouldn't have it.

I wouldn't have said he shouldn't have any but my only concern would be how much as I imagine it's fairly salty is it?

All cheese is salty! I bet there are high levels of acrylamide in smoked cheese, that's probably why she has heard bad things about it. I wouldn't worry, if you followed everything you weren't suppose to eat you'd starve.

Loving moon cheese, smoked cheese was a special party cheese when I was growing up, I buy it every so often for myself for the memories (and because it is lush) and DH is very snotty about it.

Stompy used to love the Austrian Smoked Cheese with bits of ham through it!
But our Sainbo's stopped stocking it. :(

Thanks ladies. He doesn't get a lot and it's only a couple of times a week along with a bit of fruit. Mum had it in her head that smoked things were bad - she's never heard of acrylamides! Lol. It's the usual everything in moderation rule again isn't it? :-)
