Lost too much weight after tummy bug?

Oh, we're done with all that vegetable-steaming and mess, our children are cutlery-wielding, spaghetti-chomping angels... at least some of the time.

Lost too much weight after tummy bug?

Postby FestiveTidings » 04 Apr 2012, 10:42

Roo was never a chubby baby (always followed the 75th percentile for weight). However he's has a tummy bug for the past couple of days and has now started eating again but only tiny amounts. He seems to have lost tons of weight and I'm worried.

He's still BFing a lot but I'm concerned that my milk isn't as nutritious/calorific as usual as I've also had the bug.

I don't want him to lose any more weight. Any advice?

He's 14 months now

I'm in a similar position at the moment, but all I can say is, give him some time. It takes a while to get your appetite back after a nasty bug, and he may have lost weight, but he will put it back on again. Just keep offering food and he'll eat when he's ready - his appetite is likely to build back up slowly. Hope he bounces back quickly, try not to worry too much. It sounds like he's being well hydrated and that, I've been told, is the main thing.

Thanks Ruckus. I keep telling myself that he'll be fine as he always has my milk to fall back on but it is still a shock when you pick him up and you can feel his ribs a bit more than before! Was even considering a visit to the health visitor for advice so im glad you replied!

He's always been a decent eater so it's a bit disconcerting to see him push his favourite foods away. I'll just need to add extra calories to foods when he does start eating properly again to help him regain the weight! I see lots of greek yoghurt, cheese and pesto pasta with Parmesan on the horizon!

We've had two tummy bugs in as many weeks! The current one doesn't seem very bad, but the last one definitely led to monkeybaby losing weight, poor little thing. However, he put it back on after a few days (maybe 5-6ish?)...it was lovely to see him get his appetite back. He'd also gone down to eating very very little for a few days, and subsisting mainly on BM. It's times like that I'm uber-glad I'm still BFing! And don't worry about your BM not being as nutritious, I'm certain it'll be exactly the same - any nutrients/calories will simply be taken from your allocation! So make sure you're looking after yourself for your sake! It's probably your illness that's making you extra worried about Roo, but he'll be fine as long as he's hydrated.

Oo, and 75th percentile for weight's still pretty robust, even if he's dropped off it during illness!

I won't say try not to worry because you will! & nothing can make us mums worry more then our babies being poorly & not eating :( My ds only managed some bread sticks & a couple of rice cakes for 6 days. Like sweetcheeks, he's also quite lean but now, 4 weeks later, he has put his weight back on (thank god!) My boy has probably had 3 sickness bugs now (this latest one was the worst) & his appetite has always returned.
