BLW and obesity / favouring carbs? In the news

If you read the article it says BLW babies favour carbs? Is this why prefer carbs over fruit, veg and meat? (Mine are dairy and soy intolerant which makes this carb preference diet tricky!).

Anyone else have a dairy and soy intolerant fussy eater?

We have just picked up Annabel Karmels fussy eater recipe book and although I never normally give them sugary food I made the banana and raisin cinnamon muffins today and they are both eating them so maybe covering fruit in sugar is the way to go? Mine refuse egg too so at least muffins have some egg in for extra protein and nutrition.

I read it as BLW babies prefer to get their energy from carbs, but spoon fed babies prefer to get their energy from sweet food. This is an extract from the study:

Results: Compared to the spoon-fed group, the baby-led group demonstrated (1) significantly increased liking for carbohydrates (no other differences in preference were found) and (2) carbohydrates to be their most preferred foods (compared to sweet foods for the spoon-fed group). Preference and exposure ratings were not influenced by socially desirable responding or socioeconomic status, although an increased liking for vegetables was associated with higher social class.


From my sample of one TheWriggler loves fruit but will scoff the carbs (pasta, potato, bread) at mealtimes. He (and I!) loves the no-added-sugar banana bread on here, it is sweet enough without adding sugar.

No advice on the allergy front I'm afraid, is the free-from stuff no use if you have multiple allergies?

It's odd how they phrase it as sugar is technically a carbohydrate?

The free from foods tend to be gluten free and don't taste very good, and my boys can eat gluten.
I'm wondering why so many toddlers are fussy and often prefer carbs/sugar, is it an evolutionary thing? Is there a point to it? Or is it that we are carb obsessed in the western world?

[I tried the banana bread but one of mine hates whole
raisins so I tried blending them in the mixture but then it doesn't seem to cook properly. I have spent days trying to perfect it and got really bored and sick of the sight of that recipe to be honest.]
