is there such a thing as too much cinnamon?

Oh, we're done with all that vegetable-steaming and mess, our children are cutlery-wielding, spaghetti-chomping angels... at least some of the time.

is there such a thing as too much cinnamon?

T wants cinnamon ALL the time. Especially on porridge. By the teaspoonful - and then she'll lick the dust off the spoon.

I've been assuming it can't do her any harm and the amount of porridge she is eating as a result is phenomenal! Is lots of cinnamon okay?

I hope so because I eat a lot of it too! I know I am a lot bigger than her but I am sure it's a harmless spice.

I have a vague hope that it may be a little-known superfood - nutritional value of cinnamon, anyone?

Excellent! It also seems to be a good source of calcium, iron, potassium and various vitamins. Perhaps I'll let her add more to my porridge too (she really really wants to!).

I think I read somewhere that you can hallucinate from too much cinnamon but I think you have to have ALOT. Maybe it's just one of those things I dreamt... :?

I thought it was nutmeg that's hallucinogenic...? Let's all raid our spice racks and find out!

And while we are on the subject of spices. I only recently found out that they use turmeric for cuts and scrapes in some countries! Amazing what you can do with your spice cupboard really!

Turmeric is hugely popular across the Indian subcontinent as a cure-all spice. I've seen it mixed with oil and rubbed on broken and sprained limbs, sprinkled very liberally over cuts and burns and used as a gargle for sore throat (I've actually tried the last one - it tastes FOUL but it certainly made me feel better, even if it was just a placebo effect). Not sure how effective it is in all those applications, but I have seen some very yellow children!
Spice geek fact: the active ingredient is called curcumin and is an anti-inflammatory.
