Bought the Quinoa, Read the packet, Got Scared, Now What?

Oh, we're done with all that vegetable-steaming and mess, our children are cutlery-wielding, spaghetti-chomping angels... at least some of the time.

Bought the Quinoa, Read the packet, Got Scared, Now What?

Postby realsLINshady » 30 Sep 2007, 12:28

Ok - what do I do with it? Treat it like couscous or rice?

Given that Small hates both of those foodstuffs, am I just being overly optimistic that she'll even look at Quinoa?

Am a tad worried that this meal with end with both Small AND DH doing the "What is this s**t and why are you trying to poison me with it?" face.

I'd like to add that I would never have bought it if it wasn't for you guys so I'm counting on those recipes. Or else you all owe me 1.5p each to pay for the unused packet. :mona

We liked the burgers - a whole batch now in the freezer. I get the whole concept now, having swiped a spoonful before shoving it the burger mix. I guess I'll use it interchangeably with rice or couscous. Small was a bit unconvinced but I think there is a huge batch of teeth pushing on through and she's not convinced by anything much at the moment.

In the scariest form imaginable - dried. I soaked them overnight, then boiled them for an hour this morning and then bunged them in the burgers. What started out as quite a simple-looking recipe turned into a hugely ORGANISED production number as a result (hence being behind the original scheduled delivery-date of Saturday night).

(On a side note, I'm concerned that going back to work has reactivated all my anal, hyper-organised, project manager skills that I took so long to shed in my pursuit of maternal-laziness.)

I would have bought them in a can but Waitrose let me down.

Having been appraised of the many many benefits of Quinoa I am keen to give it a go ... so will go off in search of it this weekend. Aaah, to have Sainsburys in NZ - our supermarkets aren't quite as lavish here I find.

I am wondering if I could make quinoa and chicken patties (thinking DH won't eat quinoa unless its disguised - I know we cant be tricksy with our children but there is nothing stopping us with husbands right!)

My thought was I would cook the quinoa and then add it to some minced chicken, with some egg and parsley and probably some garlic. Do you quinoa experts think it would work?

Also, has anyone tried cooking it in a ricemaker?
