Baby Trying to Swallow Before Chewing

Postby klhardin » 23 Jun 2016, 14:24

My 6-month-old just started BLW. He has no problem picking up food and getting it into to his mouth. The problem is that he doesn't chew! I thought the whole idea with BLW is that they learn to chew first and then swallow, but my baby seems to have it backwards!

I've mostly been giving him fingers of soft fruits and veggies. He usually manages to "bite" off (he doesn't have any teeth yet) a chunk or two, but then he tries to swallow those large chunks instead of chewing first. Of course, this means he gags a lot. It doesn't seem to bother him, but it makes me nervous - especially when I know how big of a chunk he has in his mouth.

Any suggestions for helping him learn to chew? What should I be offering him that might help him learn chew before swallowing?

It's normal for them to gag a lot at first, while they get the hang of chewing. Have you tried making exaggerated chewing movements while you're eating, so he can copy you? Lots of babies find that helpful.
