Porridge Fingers???

My baby is on a gluten free diet at the moment, so we tried making these with plum 4 grain porridge and his formula. They came out like a soggy pancake - is that what it was meant to be like??? He still enjoyed them but they really didn't look very nice at all!

My husband had this problem (using normal porridge oats and cows milk). I reckon the trick is to pack well down with a spoon and drain off any excess milk. I squish them down again after microwaving and find adding some raisins helps them glue :)

What's the recipe for porridge fingers? Or is it just very sticky porridge allowed to set?

I'm curious and have tried searching the web but found nothing - except many stories of porridge drawers! I don't have a drawer I can use but I do have a shallow plastic tub with a lid! :)

the recipe is just 3tsb of porridge oats with 3 tsb of milk, microwave for 2 mins, cut into fingers and allow to cool. Will give it another go tomorrow. Thankfully Harry's not fussy ha ha

I just make a small amount of porridge and cook extra long. Then squish together, if not dried and stuck together enough, just cook longer! Regular oats and regular milk.

Brilliant - thankyou. I'm curious to try them (and also with LO!) since I read someone having them spread with butter (or in our case Vegan spread). It's like deep fried Mars bars - sounds wrong, but if you happened across them you'd have to try them...

Also I tend to load spoons with porridge for LO (which he doesn't mind as he has self-feeding skills with spoons as well as fingers) because when I dolloped some in front of him on the high chair, whilst he loved playing with it, I am still finding it in places I didn't realise food could reach. Porridge fingers could be the answer!!!

I used to just make extra large quantities of porridge and leave what was left to set in the bottom of the (non-stick) pan. It then peeled off very satisfactorily and I could cut or tear off chunks.

See Ives and Busmother's response above! (normal porridge in a pan allowed to cool) :)

I had great luck making them with buckwheat flakes, which are gluten-free (I used a microwave). They were solid and I loved them! I don't think it would work with instant baby porridge.

I still make them for Will and they always seem to work with the recipe amounts ie. equal quantities of porridge to milk. I found that it works best with smaller oats so don't go for the nice big ones you can get, also the longer you leave them the more set they will be, if you take them out of the bowl straight away they will fall apart.
At 20 months they are still one of W's favourite snacks!!!

After a few attempts I have now perfected my porridge fingers! I got the idea on here to make purple porridge (thanks MummaQ) and my LO loves it, however it is VERY messy and for those mornings when we don't have as much time we now have purple porridge fingers instead which he also loves! I do 4 tablespoons of porridge oats, 3 tablespoons of milk and 1 tablespoon of pureed blueberries, microwave for only a minute as any longer it goes rubbery and he's not so keen, this morning he even ignored his mango for these which was amazing as he LOVES his mango!!

Yay purple porridge lovers made! I'm so please he likes it, of all the coloured porridge, my little one loves purple the best...l and yes very messy, not for the faint hearted or those with white carpets in close proximity! He also loves mango purée added to porridge now too, but too a while for him to try it. The purple definatley catches their eye!!!! I can't wait for summer when he can eat this in just his nappy.... I've ruined all his bibs and a few baby grows from diffently coloured porridges!

Xxx

We did porridge fingers this morning, after seeing the recipe on here (mini bumpkin seems hooked on toast fingers so wanted to try something new). I spread them with mashed prunes - they were a hit!
