Tap water

Postby Mini B's Mummy » 30 May 2011, 04:38

Mini B is 5.5 months and we're planning to start BLW in a couple of weeks. He already sits in his highchair with us when we eat during the day and has a plastic spoon, cup and sippy cup to play with. I was reading another thread about offering water with food, which we plan to do, and just wanted to check that those of you who gave water from 6 months just gave normal tap water (assuming you're somewhere where the tap water's fine to drink)?

It seems like a silly question now I ask, but our Early Childhood Health Centre showed the BLW DVD when talking about weaning (which I was pleased about, as not many people that I've spoken to here (Sydney) seem to have heard of it), but when the film showed someone filling sippy cup from the tap, the nurse said that we should actually use cooled boiled water instead, which seems like a lot of extra faff. And if you did boil your LO's water at first, what age did you stop? Thanks!

Welcome.
I used tap water for my lo's once they were 6 month old. I agree too much faf.
Someone may be along soon with a more scientific answer.
Aspiring yummy mummy but managing to be a slummy mummy to 2 gorgeous boys.

Straight from the tap when we're in The Blackforest, through the Brita filter when we're in The Netherlands (but that's just because we don't like the calcium taste). Bottled water in places where tap water's a bit dodgy.

We used tap water too - I think if you're weaning early they recommend boiling water but if your child is putting food in their mouth, then they are also probably picking up toys of the floor so boiling water is too much faff!

Tap water for SuperL. too! At the age of 6 months they put anything in their mouths, they should be able to handle normal tap water!

I think with Fluff we boiled the water to start with, then used filtered, but eventually moved to tap (can't remember when). Poor second child Sybil just got it from the tap. Agree with others - if they are eating other foods, crawling around and licking things, then tap water is fine!

To put it in perspective - is the bath water regularly slurped? OUrs has been form an early age - and we tok DD1 swimming from 2 mths and she used to drink loads of that.......!

Another one who just gives tap water here.
Mummy to M - September 1998, D - October 2007, and E - May 2010. All BF, cloth nappies, and carried in the same sling, not sure BLW existed in the 90s though!

Thank you all! Yep, his toys go straight from floor to mouth, he's eaten the odd bit of sand at the beach and loves to suck the bath water from a wet flannel of an evening, which I guess he swallows some of (forgot that was tap water!)

Think I'll stop worrying (about that particular one) and look forward to starting with the food!

Dr. Neustaedter has something to say about tap water on his website. http://cure-guide.com/drinking-water-choices/
There is so much to worry about and I chose to forget about tap water myself but I think there's some useful information there.
