Super defiant four year old.

Whatever you like, really, knock yourself out... I'm not the boss of you.

We missed the bus for swimming last week because of useless mass of inertia syndrome, which had the natural consequence that we had to trek across the park to catch a different bus. I am hoping that we will catch the one we intend to this week!

I suggest the "drop in" technique. The further along a sequence you can "drop in" the more likely the child will complete the sequence without resistance. E.g. "Go brush your teeth please." <resistance> "Here is your toothbrush with toothpaste." <brush brush>

It's one part not dignifying the defiance with a reaction/setting a non-verbabl expectation of compliance, and one part capitalizing on our brains' liking of sequences and patterns.
