Cut won't heal WWYD?

Postby Lily » 27 Mar 2016, 08:34

Izbiz has a cut at the bottom of his ear, where the lobe meets the side of his head. It's been there for about 3 or 4 weeks and it keeps opening up again; I think sometimes he picks it, but often it's just pulled when he's getting undressed or whatever. This morning he woke up with blood all over his cheek and pillow. It's a small cut, only about 1.5cm long, too trivial for a doctor, but the position makes it impossible to cover with a plaster and I'm worried about possible infection. WWYD?

Poor Iz. I've used something like Germoline New Skin before - it sprays on over cuts and forms a protective barrier. Would that work perhaps?

Is that the one that stings like a b*tch when you put it on CF. if it's the one we've got he'll probably only let you do it once. I don't know tbh, sorry.

I did have a paint-on one which stung like all hell. But a great idea in principle - I'll have a look for a non-stinging one. Thanks!

We used a spray on one on moo recently but it was his thumb tip (which oh had got with the nail clippers!). He didn't say it hurt.

Could you get micro pore tape to stay on?

Nope, micro pore tape peeled off straight away. Tried the spray at bedtime, no complaints of stinging but cut was open again this morning. Feels ridiculous but I think I might have to ask for medical help.

Do you think the Pharmacist might be able to help, if you're not keen on calling a Dr yet? Although I suppose they would suggest the kinds of things you already tried.

That's a good idea. I'm away tomorrow and Thurs but will try to take him to a pharmacy when I get back.

Would it work to wind a gauze bandage all the way round his head? Might look a little melodramatic but could keep things in place?

Superglue? If is not healing the doctor may be the only way to go and they can glue it

Have you tried moisturiser? E45 or similar? My sister used to get dry skin when she was a child, particularly between her toes and under her ear lobes, which split and was very sore and she had to apply E45 with cotton buds. Moisturiser keeps the skin soft and allows it to heal, rather than dry out and crack. It also might help reduce any itching from dry skin, which might stop Izbiz from opening the wound again.

Wow, hadn't thought of glue; good to know it's there as a last resort. But will def try moisturiser, thanks LL. The skin is very dry so I think that's probably exactly what's happening.
