What k-room gadget would you be lost without?

Postby ChristmasGift » 03 Feb 2016, 23:14

A few years ago I wanted a food mixer but as my k-room is so tiny I really don't have room for one. I got a magi mix le micro as a compromise. I love it and use it a couple of times a week, most weeks. It's really small but for the three of us I don't know if I'd use a bigger mixer than often. Latest use was to make cofa's delicious fruit and nut balls on Tuesday but it's perfect for pestos, chopping veg to go in bolognaise, making breadcrumbs etc.
What is your favourite k-room gadget?

Probably my mixer as I make bread a lot and the bread hook is the lazy person's friend :) That said I am slightly obsessed with my soup maker, after dithering about whether to get one for months as a pan and a blender really do just the same job. My Dad bought one for me on offer at the food show and I really love it! I use it all the time.

A few little ones:
- Lakeland Evenslice, which is essentially a bit of plastic with guide rails for cutting straight slices of bread. Fabulous thing.
- Microplane for grating, esp parmesan.
- Thermapen for measuring temperatures.

Mine would definitely my hand blender/mixer thing (it's an Andrew James one from Amazon, probably a similar size to yours CG which is perfect for our uses). We also a bread maker (for even lazier people than p_h :D ) which gets used every now and again...a nice to have rather than an essential like the blender/mixer. My new favourite gadget is the spiralizer though...made a courgetti spaghetti yesterday using the blender to make a butter bean pesto then the spiralizer to make the courgette spaghetti. Was lovely!

I'd have to say my thermomix. I make dips a few times a week, soup once a week, salads, cakes, biscuits, pretty much everything in it. Tomorrow I'm making some cheese and herb scones to take to booby group.

I love my Kenwood Chef! I use it and it's multitude of attachments all the time (except for the pasta maker which hasn't been used since I had the girls!!!)

I've been contemplating a spiralizer and a nutribullet. Not sure if they're a flash in the pan thing which will end up sitting at the back of to cupboard (with the pasta maker!!!)

I use my Nutribullet loads, HF. It's great because it's incredibly powerful and also super easy to clean. But then I don't have a bigger mixer or food processor, just a stick blender, so the Nutribullet does all my sauces, dips, purées etc, as well as grinding nuts, spices and seeds.

Fridge. Keeps things cold. Couldn't live without it.

^This is about what I can come up with too. DH and I got a deep fryer and ice cream maker, respectively, for Christmas, but haven't have a chance to use them yet. I'm looking forward to making donuts and ice cream at a moment's notice, that will be really useful for my post-baby fitness goals.

On the subject of kitchen gadgets, though, highly recommend this Alton Brown review of 'unitaskers'-- kitchen gadgets that only do one very specific things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgFeVlw2Ywg

I think my Kenwood mixer thingy, or toasted sammich maker are probably the two slightly specialised things but top of the list would have to be the kettle, can't survive without tea. I did. Insider giving up tea for lent but I couldn't survive I don't think.

Hahaha, MP!
I'm way too attached to the microwave. If we're talking about gadgets, though, the compost roaster! It takes an enormous bucket of table scraps and reduces it to about a cup of brown powder that you can sprinkle on the flower garden.
Saurus (April 2012) wants to open all the cupboards to see the pipes.
Zilla (December 2013) is unstoppable. And really likes pizza.
Turtle (November 2015) isn't cute yet, but he's working on it.
And Mia and Oreo are my emotional support cats.

Wow, that sounds amazing DF, possibly not one of my top three gadgets but very useful. Much quicker than waiting for it to compost down, which I can never get ours to do.

Boo - can't find such a thing as a compost roaster over here, have just looked :-(
OH would have loved one, especially as they don't collect food waste in East Sussex.

Another Microplave devotee here, I have three and use at least one a day.
Stainless steel tongs.
I'd say my Kenwood mixer, but so I only ever use it for bread. I really ought to branch out and make something else with it.
Our mini chopper broke and I had forgotten all about it. I used to use it all of the time. Maybe time to get a new one...
