why do I think I need blankets?

Postby issi » 29 Jul 2013, 15:02

We're going camping in S Wales in a couple of weeks and I'm a bit obsessed with blankets. We already have a couple but I have the urge to buy loads - why do I think I need so many? Am I right? Does anyone have any recommendations for good blankets (both picnic and snuggle-under varieties)?

We took several blankets with us camping a couple of weeks ago as i thought we would need them but the only one we used was the picnic one.
Only recommendation would be to make sure picnic blanket has waterproof underside.

We were camping this weekend and didn't really use any of the blankets. But it does depend on the weather. I don't think I'd buy blankets especially though, I just threw in a few we already had. Ones that wash easily....

(I may go a bit overboard on blankets/muslins etc these days, after a vomit-filled night in a tent with a 2-year-old Jiglet :scream )

I normally take plenty of blankets, but then it's usually freezing when we go! I've found it's warmest to put the blankets on the sleeping mats under the sleeping bags.

We always take a random selection of blankets. We haven't camped yet this year, but last year camped three times - the first time we needed all the blankets, and then the rest of the trips required only various combinations of some of them. But I'm glad we had them. I'm not sure I'd go out and buy any, but I think we take maybe 7 or 8? We have two double bed sized blanket that DH and I have under our air mat/over us if required, and then the single sized ones for the children's beds.

I find blankets are really useful to put under airbeds - they keep the cold away, I don't find a groundsheet gives enough insulation for the cool of the night and we don't have carpet for our tent... (though I also use picnic rugs for under the airbeds and then use them as tent carpet or outside during the daytime)

I usually like to stick to sleeping bags on a camping trip because they stay just as warm and easier to pack. If you must have some soft blankets, I would recommend Yakima blankets. They are durable and will keep you warm in low temperatures. I heard that you can get warming blankets and led lights. Here are the ones out there and learn seo. I agree about the airbed. A hard ground can really ruin a night of camping.

And I couldn't work out why you were worried you might have too many blankets. Of COURSE you need blankets I was thinking!

:D

While we're on the subject, and out of interest, does anyone here go camping in the Winter?

When we went it was the last weekend in August, and it was sooooo cold at night. I don't know what the temperature was, but the nights were very clear. Anyway, we only just barely coped with the cold by wearing all our spare layers, Josie even slept with her coat on.

So I just wondered how people cope going with children in the Winter, or if they don't? Maybe you're all sensible like me ;)

We went to a haven site & stayed in a caravan last October and it was freeeeeezing at night! Ds was only about 4 months old & still feeding at night so I fired up the gas fire every time I got up to him but it was painful to get out of bed! Don't think we'd do it at that time of year again!

Yes it's the gettign out of bed that I think I was getting at. I understand people who do it regularly have winter-weight sleeping bags and all the right gear, but every time I had to get my top half out of the sleeping bag, and then go the whole hog and actually get a boob out, it was almost unbearable!

Maybe I should have got a co-sleeping bag ;)

We went camping in Snowdonia in April once to test out our gear before our big trip... forgetting that the gear we'd bought was for a big trip to Italy in the summer :? Soooo cold. Maybe that's where my obsession with blankets comes from!
