Wwyd - af while camping

Postby BigFlower » 27 Jul 2013, 21:25

Hi,

Sorry if this is a daft question but we're going camping next weekend for the first time in ages and my period is due the same time (typical!!).

We're going to a festival so portaloos.

Usually use mooncup but will that be a logistical issue with portaloos? Would I be better getting some disposable stuff?

It sounds so silly and trivial but I can't make up my mind!

Thank you wise ones!

I haven't used a mooncup but portaloos at festivals are usually so manky it means hovering and get out of there as quick as possible without touching anything, can you do that with the mooncup? If not I would go for disposable methods.

Norethisterone, not great because you need to take 3 times daily but probably worth it. Need to start 3 days before the earliest af could come. If you have had your BP done recently gp might do over phone.

I think dealing with pads/tampons - carrying them with you, what to do with them if no bin is worse than dealing with a mooncup IMO.

If it were me I would whip it out, tip down the loo, then if no water pop back to tent super fast and rinse it and put it back in in the much more pleasant environment of the tent. But that's mainly as it takes me a while to get mine in properly. And much less frequently than you would need to change other sanitary items. Much easier with a mooncup, I think.

I vote mooncup as I find diposable pads a bit, erm, sweaty (sorry!)

Could you maybe just wipe it out in the portaloo then when you get back to the tent take it out again and rinse it in a little box with water in then pop it back in again? x

You could always use a panty liner for the dash back to the tent.

Urgh I hate getting my period when I'm away. Camping makes it worse! Mooncup does sound like the way to go, definitely over tampons. Maybe take a pack of disposable pads just in case the mooncup turns out to be too difficult.

It makes me grateful I've only had one period since 2010 and probably won't have another till 2015.

It depends how heavy your flow is. I only have really heavy flow one day, when I have to empty my mooncup at work and just tip it out and reinsert. On lighter flow days I can get away with only doing that twice a day. I would think Moon up (twice daily emptying without rinsing) would be easier than tampons if your flow requires finding a loo every 3-4 hours or overnight. But portaloos are utterly revolting with floating poo islands and I would not go anywhere that I had to do more than pee in one.

I would take the mooncup and a plastic sheet and change it in the tent, rather than muck around with the portaloo yuk

I always end up being on while we are camping! I use my normal method but do ensure I have towels for back up at night.

Thanks so much.

I'm lucky and have quite light flow and usually just have to deal with mooncup every 8 ish hours. And back up pads.

The meds to delay sound awesome but ttc so will avoid for now but definitely bear in mind for the future.

Thanks again everyone.

Yeah, I just put two and two together! Howofulky there'll be no need for either! Added some crossed fingers to those pom poms! (why does autocorrect always want to capitalize the P on pom!)
