WWYD UK or France?

Postby biccytoria » 29 Jun 2012, 10:33

DH and I still haven't sorted out what we're going to do in our holiday at the end of August. We definitely want to go camping, initially it was going to be for a fortnight but I think we've decided that it'll be just 7-10 days. We just can't decide where. If we stayed in the UK then it would be easier to break up camp and come home if the weather was pants (long term forecast isn't great). We've debated scotland, lake district, even falling back on the dorset campsite we've already been to twice. We've also discussed going to France, though we're struggling to find an area we want to go to that doesn't have a long drive once we get to Calais. France has the potential to be more expensive and less flexible, but we know that the food will be much better and we both LOVE spending time buying tasty things in french hypermarkets.

We just CAN'T make a decision :scream DH reckons he can find a crossing for £85, and that Diesel will be much cheaper over there. We can get to Dover in less than two hours.

Am I just being a scaredy cat, not wanting to go to France? I'm not usually, I don't quite understand why I'm not embracing the idea :?

Have the kids already got passports? If not you've plenty of time to organise them, but it is an extra cost.

So are the road tolls in France which can work out quite expensive. Having said that I would probably still go to France, just because the UK is a bit pants.

We went to France last year and it was great - although we did only get as far as Disneyland. We did have a night in Calais though on the way down:

I would say France. You are likely to get better weather (although don't hold me to that). Yes, the toll roads are a bit pricey but man, you should see their service stations!! Certainly puts most of the British ones to shame. Clean loos, good food and more often than not a nice little toy/book area within sight of the eating area. And they appear very frequently, not miles and miles apart.

The French folk were very helpful with the kids, and very accomodating in restaurants (not just at Disney).

Of course I know that us British are also a nice friendly bunch but there was something about going to France which made it feel more like a holiday.

I'd go to France... Is taking a ferry from Portsmouth out of the question? Lots of nice areas of France accessible via Portsmouth...

Do you have any tesco club card points? We worked out we could get over on the train for free by using ours.

Again I'd look at the passports as an extra cost. But as you're closer to France than Scotland and the weather is likely to be nicer I think I'd head south!

thanks everyone :D We already have passports as we went to France at Easter so no extra cost there. You've convinced me that I was being a stick in the mud so we're looking at going to France. The longer crossings seem horrifically expensive in the school holidays (can't go off-season as A is at school) so we'll stick with a cheap dover/calais crossing but we're investigating doing an overnight stay in a cheap forumula1 hotel on the way there and back, which widens the options.

Now we've got to decide where to go!!!

Is the tunnel not an option? We went in the Easter hols and I pre-booked our crossings for about £70.
