Recommend me a campsite....

Campers, festi-heads, hikers, even spelunkers... all welcome here. No fresh air activity too hearty, no fold-up product too desirable.

.....where you can pitch wherever with friends in a group not restricted to designated pitches. We've been to Shell Island which was great but it does get very windy there. My Sis now refuses to go as they had to pull their tent down at 2am and sleep in the boot of the car!

Oooooh I love Shell Island. But if you can cope without running water or proper toilets there's a place just up the road from there in the hills (?near a waterfall) without designated pitches which is even nicer. Might be a bit eek with kids as there's a little stream that runs through it, and you can have campfires.
Have you looked at http://www.thehappycampers.co.uk/campsites/
Lots of really lovely campsites there. We stayed at this one http://www.batcombevale.co.uk/home.asp with MJ when he was about 18 months and it was lovely.

I'm sure Shell Island is lovely now but I have horrific memories of a family holiday there about 25 years ago....perma-fog, stinking cess pits, the list goes on!

We've just camped hereover half term. While there are designated pitches, it's a pretty small site so if you managed to book at a good time you could have the whole site to yourselves, or certainly be the only tents (when we were there there was only one other tent, and three caravans). Facilities are good. It's probably not much further from you than Shell Island.
