Christmas Family/In-Law Vent Thread 2014

Oh look, it's broadly a place to talk about special occasions, party tips and to swap present ideas but let's be perfectly honest, this forum is here because I want to get excited about CHRIIIIIISTMAS from about June onwards.

Christmas Family/In-Law Vent Thread 2014

Postby pirate_han » 20 Dec 2014, 16:30

Can I start this to moan about my DH please? I don't see why I should sort out visiting his family so I haven't done anything about it, other than suggest that perhaps it would be a good idea to invite people to our house as a) I'm 34w pregnant and can't be arsed driving about (DH doesn't drive) and b) B is 2 and her cousin is 1, we usually all meet at FILs and while I love him he has no toys and a dirty house, so it gets a bit awkward when the kids get bored after an hour. I thought our house (toy central) might mean a nicer time together. I suggested this weeks ago and DH agreed but obviously feels that 20th December is the ideal time to organise four families getting together over Christmas and is now irritated that people have other things to do (shocker). The only suitable day is New Years Day, which is fine, but DH now decides that he wants to see FIL over Christmas also, which would be fine except the only day FIL has free now is Boxing Day and I was kind of hoping to have Christmas Day and Boxing Day at home as we are busy on every other day DH has off. Any other year I wouldn't see this as an issue but I am very pregnant and very tired and I just want to sit on my sofa! Arghhhhh.

Thanks for starting this! I'm sure I'll be back before long with some moans of my own. We leave in half an hour to fly to the PILs for a two week visit! They're nice people really, but their lifestyle and eating style are just so different from ours...

He'd be welcome but he doesn't drive either so I'd have to pick him up (no buses), and if we're picking him up we might as well go there. Plus he is used to hosting and I think he might feel offended if nobody went round at any point. Oh well.

This! We are at my parents (although away for a few days now) and my mum has already asked muncher to go to church with her, told me I need to night wean squish, failed to listen to muncher on numerous occasions resulting in unnecessary tantrums and got both kids crying 2 minutes before leaving for a 2 hour drive to our shack. Squish hates the car at the moment so we were aiming for happy.

I'll probably be back with more once we're back.

Can I reserve a space for later as after a night of B vomming (4 sheet changes and finally in our bed on a towel :scream ) my dad and stepmother are visiting today. My dad is guaranteed to annoy me at least once by referring to my stepmother as 'mummy' when talking to B (wtf? She's not even my mummy let alone B's! She's 10 years older than me ffs).

Hugs/wine to all in need x

I'm pre-booking a slot too - off to spend the day with MIL, who has already phoned me up twice this week to remind me not to drink a single drop of alcohol or my baby will develop terrible brain damage. We only told her about the bump on Sunday so that's pretty good going! No use pointing out to her that I'm a specialist nurse, recently passed my MSc and more than capable of interpreting current guidelines... Not to mention having already grown two perfectly healthy babies!! Grrrr, it's going to be a long day!

Every year I do all our Christmas shopping around the boys, it's usually done before they break up from school except maybe a couple of bits. Every year BIL and SIL leave it to the weekend before Christmas! Every year we are stuck in with their kids while they go shopping. It makes me soooo mad!! She has two days a week where both boys are at school - that's a good chunk of time to do it without needing childcare. They never repay the favour. I'm so sick of it.
I am displaying my displeasure to DH and the kids which isn't fair. Just wish our kids could go and trash their perfect house 4 days before Christmas!

Hope your day was better than expected mindy, and fozza, that's awful!

B's norovirus was a blessing in disguise as being up all night meant she really needed a nap after lunch and so I was able to ask my dad to go after four hours (he is the type who sits there for 7/8 hours being waited on) so I could drive around with her to help her sleep. Thus he only irritated me a couple of times - calling my stepmother 'mummy', winding B up, and bringing in a huge bag of presents for her and leaving it in the middle of the room for half an hour before saying she couldn't have them before Christmas Day. Not that I'm ungrateful for the gifts, I just felt it was a bit much to expect of a two year old to show them their presents and then remove them. Oh well, it was bearable.

P_h, I think they just don't really think about the need to be considerate of the little ones and don't realize they are teasing them by having things out that they can't have! MIL has all the presents out here, including some labeled "from Santa", plus a bunch of candy canes hanging on a display right at L's level. He's doing surprisingly good about ignoring/resisting the presents so far, but I think we're going to have to ask for the candy canes to be moved!

Also annoyed, as always, with the lack of fresh food. When we came in the summer they were great about having fruit on hand, but this time there is literally only a grapefruit and some "fruit cups" full of sugary syrup. We asked about fruit at dinner last night, and they were amazed that he ate through two fruit cups, and yet they didn't think to pick up any fruit when they went to the store this morning! We have no car while here, so I guess we'll have to put in a very specific fruit request next time they head to the store.

Big hugs to those of you staying with family/inlaws. We're all pretty local so only have to suffer day visits. Just as well really. Last night my brother in law informed me that Sproglet's hair looks like a mop and needs cutting (it's a mass of beautiful, unruly curls that are too short to tie up) and that her face looked a mess (not in a ooo, poor thing, that rash she's had looks nasty kind of way. More of a your scabby child is putting me off my dinner kind of way). I chose to ignore him completely but am really quite disappointed in myself for not shouting at him on her behalf, I feel like I should have defended her, even though it would have shattered the season of peace and goodwill.

And while I'm at it, where have table manners gone FIL? Why is it necessary to see a child tucking in beautifully to a roast dinner, head down, quietly minding her own business, and decide that's the perfect time to tease her by trying to steal her chicken. If she'd have stabbed him with her fork instead of just roaring at him I'd have supported her completely, I was very tempted to do it myself.
