christmas card making ideas?

Oh look, it's broadly a place to talk about special occasions, party tips and to swap present ideas but let's be perfectly honest, this forum is here because I want to get excited about CHRIIIIIISTMAS from about June onwards.

christmas card making ideas?

Postby busmother » 07 Dec 2014, 12:46

I know this has been asked before, but what are people's top tips for making large quantities of Christmas cards with the little darlings, that produce a reasonably attractive outcome? Last year I drew star or Christmas tree outlines on card, and they filled in the shapes by cutting and gluing in little bits of silver or green paper - they enjoyed it and was very effective. But I'd like to do something different and I'm stuck. I did keep all last year's cards so we could cut bits up from them, but still think they could end up a bit of a mess if I don't have some sort of structure for them.

We do footprints. Toes at the bottom of the card.

In the last few years we've done (not our cards but from google images to show you what I mean).
Green footprints and made them Christmas trees http://www.freekidscrafts.com/wp-conten ... s-tree.jpg
Black footprints made into penguins. http://momalwaysfindsout.com/wp-content ... nguins.jpg
White footprints made into snowmen. http://dressesandmesses.files.wordpress ... -julie.jpg
Brown footprints (toes at top) made into reindeer heads. http://www.emmaowl.com/blog/wp-content/ ... eer-02.png

With the toddlers I do one of each of their feet on each card. They love getting their feet painted. We have a little production line going. I cut and fold all the cards. Put paint on a plate and then DH holds one of them up and I paint a foot, then we do all the cards. Then we swap child and do the others footprints. Normally leave them all on the floor in the spare room overnight to dry, then you can decorate the next day. We just use poster paint. It's actually quite quick.

We have done...
cookie cutters dipped in glue and printed onto cards, then add glitter, v easy for them to do and quite effective (ignore the glitter that gets everywhere)
Handprints made into reindeer
Random collage from Xmas paper and glitter cut into star shapes and stuck on cards
Handprints made into santas

Not quite decided what to do this year...

Most successful ones have been these two:
1. Let them loose on big sheets of paper with a couple of different colours (we did green and red) doing whatever they like- cut results out into xmas shapes- we did simple ones like stars or snowmen and then stuck onto card. V simple but quite abstract and effective
2. Mix white paint with a little pva. Potato print a star onto black card and sprinkle on a bit of glitter. That's prob what we shall do this year
"So they went off together. But wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his Bear will always be playing."

I fancy getting my big one to draw the brown branches of a Christmas tree, then get them all to use their fingerprints to fill in the green on the branches and add red and yellow fingerprints for baubles and star on top.
Not sure if I'll manage it....

This is what I did over a few nights except I did the branches.

Ds1 has done Father Christmas in a sleigh and reindeer with fingerprints http://www.craftymorning.com/santa-slei ... -reindeer/

Ds2 has done Olaf footprints as a card rather than in salt dough http://www.iheartartsncrafts.com/frozen ... -ornament/

Ds3 was given trees cut out of green card and red, blue and gold paint. Each plate had a peg holding a Pom Pom and he used it to dab paint on to be baubles. They look really effective! Ds2 did it last year at nursery with cotton buds. We then put glue and glitter on once they'd dried!

In the past we have done footprint penguins, hand and footprint reindeer, handprint angels, hand print with each finger being a snowman and a handprint tree decorated with metallic stickers for baubles and a gold star sticker. We do one for close family members then I scan and print them out onto card for other people.
