Ds aged 5 mo has spent last month waking up much more than usual, has stopped sleeping in his cot in the day, this weekend will only sleep on the boob. Eye rubbing , a rash round his eye . Completely jolly when he isn't tired. Remind me this phase will pass. I burst into tears this morning feeling like a bad mum. I felt like I try so hard to get it right for him but still he cries and I doubted myself and my approach :(

I'm sure you're doing the right things and that you're a great mum.
We do.t tend to have eye probs for teething though. Could he be wiping gunk from his nose in to his eye? I'd get the eye looked at and I'd also try to be less hard on myself if I were you. It's normal for sleeping habits to change as.they grow. Maybe he's having a.developmental leap at the moment. Check out the wonder weeks book or website, it could really help. X

((wlp)) I remember that stage very well, right down to the tearfulness and self-doubt. Sleep deprivation doesn't do you any favours on that front, so do try to be gentle with yourself.

No idea on the eye thing, I'm afraid, but ime sleep issues at that age aren't necessarily teeth-related. Around 4 mo is when they start having proper sleep cycles - newborns drop right into deep sleep and stay there till something wakes them, but once the cycles start, they will surface regularly into lighter sleep. That makes them much more liable to wake frequently, especially if something's changed since they dropped off (eg a boob has been removed from their mouth). Izbiz went from alright naps and pretty good nights to terribly short naps and at least 5 or 6 night wakings at about 4 months. It was torture, but if it is just that, then you and LO will emerge out the other side once he masters the skill of staying asleep.
