3 week old has tooth poking through!

Second babies? Forgotten everything about breast and formula, napping and wrapping and you are are going a bit MAD because you haven't slept in three days? Or it's your first baby and you are here researching the joys of weaning?

3 week old has tooth poking through!

Postby Alstarofwonder » 24 Sep 2013, 08:59

Just noticed this. She's got a tooth poking through the front of her gum at the top. Don't think it's proper teething as it's coming through the front not the bottom, so will probably recede again, but it would explain the fussiness and constant need to suck (and screaming) we've been dealing with. Anyone got any ideas on how to sooth a teething newborn?!

Eek. Poor little thing, hopefully it will recede as you say. What age fan they have granules from?
or an Amber teething thing might be worth a go?

Is it white? Are you sure it's not a bohn's nodule? Pippa had them on her gums at the side and everyone was convinced they were teeth.

My best mummy friend is a dentist and has treated a newborn with a tooth. Sadly she had to extract it, as it was wobbly and preventing her from feeding properly. Could you ask your dentist to have a look at it for you, just for reassurance if nothing else?

It does look like it could be a bohn's nodule, thanks nixxie. Do you know if they can cause pain? It's just that she seems very upset today and last night, not settling at all. I suppose it could just be wind.

Everything I have read about them seems to suggest they're harmless and cause no pain. Pippas were massive though so I suspect must have impacted on her grumpiness! Gp, health visitor and pharmacist didn't have a clue what they were. Neither did the two dentists she saw at our local nhs dentist. Got to the dental hospital with her, first dentist didn't know what it was. Consultant dentist knew straight away. He said they'd go on their own and sure enough a week later when she was about 4 months old they had gone. Make sure you get them checked out if you're worried alstar.ali!

Thanks nixxie. She's finally asleep after a very grumpy morning, so I'll keep an eye on her and call the dentist if it doesn't go soon. Only trouble is I don't think I'm registered at the dentist anymore due to forgetting to go to my.last appointment  I've been meaning to.phone them to get dd1 registered, so this might force the issue!
