Recommendations for a foolproof birthday cake?

Post them up and every so often I'll snaffle them and put them on the blog, if that's okay? It'll save you the trouble of emailing them to me. (It will mean you lose out on our charming personal interaction but I sense you can live with that.)

Recommendations for a foolproof birthday cake?

I want to make a cake for The Bab's birthday. I'll make her some non sugar laden muffins to eat so the cake will be decorated for her but eaten by the adults - does anyone have a simple cake recipe that they'd recommend?

No recipe recommendation, but WOW that you can get away with giving her muffins in place of cake! L absolutely loves cake, and would not be fooled by being given a muffin, especially if he could see that everyone else was having something different.

Mary Berry's Victoria Sponge is my go-to recipe for birthday cake. It always turns out well, leaving me with only the stress of decorating it to my liking. :) Good luck!

This has been my go to cake recently and the last few times everyone has been very complimentary about it. Even my mum who doesn't really like cake! :)

Thanks for the tips! I went with Kanga's recommendation as it looked quite suited to my level of expertise and it went down a treat! I even managed a spot of decoration :)
