OK I have to admit I've never made a kids birthday cake but am having to do Annie's as mum isn't coming up. I suppose I ought to learn some basics...

What do you use to cover the cake? Icing I mean.... Buttercream??

Oh wise ones give me some tips!!

Both buttercream and fondant are a PITA in different ways IMHO. I would go for buttercream for the butterfly but make sure you apply use a crumb layer (not sure what the technical term is, a thin first layer that sticks all the crumbs so the next layer is neat).

Crumb coat I think. Yes, buttercream is quite straightforward and for a butterfly would work well, you could decorate the wings with sprinkles etc.
My peas are gone as well as my marbles.
