Starting embroidery?

I'd like to try embroidery. I need to do something creative and I think I could make some nice little bits that I could possibly sell if I can be skilled in it. Especially in morocco, they love anything handmade, although it might have to be fairly chintzy stuff to satisfy their tastes! But I've never tried doing it and wouldn't know where to begin. I have my eye on a couple of embroidery kits on eBay, they say they come with needle and yarn and 'full instructions'. Is it something a total beginner could do or will it go over my head?

I like Aimee rays' books http://www.amazon.com/Aimée-Ray/e/B001JP3SEU/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1378755480&sr=8-2-ent
All you need is floss and a hoop.
There's an embroider everything book too. It might be available at the library.

Thanks, I've ordered an Aimee Ray book and the Embroider Everything book. Really cheap in 'used and new'. Can't wait to start!! I'm longing for a creative outlet!
I'd love to try crochet too...
