Has anyone bought fabric overseas? (what is a fat quater)?

Because BLW isn't just for lentil-weavers. Some of us like to piddle about with bits of felt and sticky-backed plastic as well.

I would like to make Munchie a bag for her ballet gear for Christmas and has seen some gorgeous fabric on Ebay from Thailand. It's sold in fat quarters?????? I have no idea what a fat quarter is!!!

I just need a couple of meters of 45" or 60" so I can do a shoe bag to go inside.

I've looked for the same design in the UK but can't find it and, I can find others I like, but this one is really pretty. Is buying from overseas a good idea?

a fabric is ca 42 inches wide. sold in lengths of this fabric width. you get a yard/meter, half a yard/meter, and a quarter yard/meter. this would be quite skinny (9inches only) . to make the fabric you buy more usable, the half yard is cut across the length, so you end up with a piece of fabric sized 21 inches (half the width of the fabric) x 18inches.

does that make sense?

if something is sold in fat quarters, you buy 2 for a half yard, 4 for a yard etc. they usually send multiple FQs out in one continuous piece
