Does your 6 year old knit?

I got this book from the library Kids Learning to Knit. I don't know how to knit and don't want to. There are too many things I already like and want to do, there's no time to add knitting in! BUT dd1 seems to want to learn. So I think we should learn the basics, and then if she wants to carry on, she can. Sooooo can a 6 year old knit? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes but I think I might be hoping lots of people say that it's waaaay too hard and I should definitely not even try! Or maybe say it's soooooo easy and we'll learn in one sitting and then I can never do it again and she can continue if she wants!

My Granny taught me to knit when I was six. I knitted clothes for my Sindy doll. I would give it a go.

I would have been around 6 when I first picked up needles but didn't learn properly until I was in my 20s as I just wasn't interested enough. I have taught a 7 year old, who picked it up really quickly because he WAS interested. All depends on your DD. I'd say it's worth a shot.

Apparently my Mum was taught by her older sister when she was 4 and the big sister was 6!

I was about 8 & hopeless!! It will probably depend on the child & the teacher - mum got frustrated quickly!

Give it a go :D

give it a go, but if you can't knit yourself yet it might be a struggle. I have classes where there are 5/6 year olds that get it in half an hour, and 10-12 year olds that just tie themselves in knots after half a term of trying!
If knitting is too much faff then try finger knitting and dolly knitting. finger knitting is very satisfying and easy, I've not come across a child yet who couldn't do it, even the really hopeless ones!!!

I taught DD1 to knit when she was just coming up 7, and she found it hard to handle, but I showed her crochet and she was away doing amazing flowers etc in no time, she has just found her knitting again (aged 8.5 yrs) and has remembered with very little reminders and is doing really well. DD2 however, at age 6.5 years, would love to do both and struggles, so we have been doing finger and hand knitting so she can make something and not feel left out!
So I guess I'm saying that it is not so much the age but the ability both in fine motor control and how determined they are to master the skill (i.e. do they give up at the first hurdle) etc, which is more to do with the individual child rather than a certain age.

I remember my mum trying to teach me when I was 13 and I got so frustrated in like 2 minutes I didn't go any further! This was after she taught me to crochet, which was sooo super easy.

The only thing I'm interested in knitting is socks. Is that hard?

Socks are knitted on five needles. I wouldn't say they're hard, but I've been knitting for 37 years! They're certainly not the easiest thing to start with, you'd need a good grounding in the basics before attempting socks.

I wouldn't start with socks!
I use a super simple teddy pattern of my own design to start kids off, It's best to start with something where the fit doesn't matter too much!

M can knit, as can I; she was 6 in March. We are about as good as each other - that is not very! actually, I know a tiny bit more than her so it's ok. I could already knit, but she's had a couple of knitting sets as gifts and we've worked through them. She's making a toy dog at the moment, it's very very slow progress but she hasn't given up yet and is visibly improving.

I could knit at 6. Every year I'd decide that I wanted to knit myself a scarf. I'd manage about 5 rows before deciding that actually my doll needed the scarf more than I did and that would be the end of it. Mum could knit brilliantly, and had far more patience teaching me to knit than I have ever had teaching my kids anything.
