So I got a new book... Its gorgeous!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Made-France-Swe ... eet+treats

(still haven't learnt to do short links!).

So there are NO instructions with it with regards to fabric etc. The instructions say stitch over 2 strands.

Any idea oh wise ones?

I have all the charts at the back so may just practice & make some little cute pictures on the aida I have already and put them on Christmas presents...

If it says stitch over two strands it probably means even weave linen. You could use aida though, but just stitch over one block as normal.

So the 2 strands are where the natural breaks / holes are in even weave linen? The photos of the finished articles look like v loose linen rather than thick starches stuff.

Yes, it's not stiff and starchy. Imagine each square made by two threads is a block of aida.

Do you know what it feels like? I'm thinking Granny hankies for Christmas....

No, its thicker than hankies. Mind you, I suppose that depends what thread count you go for...

32 count is pretty normal (i.e. 32 threads per inch i.e. 16 cross stitches per inch). Does it help at all to imagine a fabric with 32 threads per inch? It's pretty heavy, but not thick like aida. Finer (and less scratchy!) than sackcloth, but that sort of open weave.

I've got that book and have made a few things on aida and also using water soluble aida. I just stitched as I would normally, so one square on the chart was one cross going across one vertical and one horizontal strand on the fabric IYSWIM.

Been shopping on Book People by any chance?!

ETA I used the water soluble aida on linen napkins bought from M&S. You could do the same using any other fabric you have to hand or ready made hankies.

I bought it from Sew and So online, 14 count I think. Pin and then tack it on with ordinary cotton thread (i found keeping at least one pin in stopped any movement) stitch your cross stitch design on then once you're finished you just soak it in cold water for 5-10mins. I then put them on a quick rinse and spin in my machine and using fusible interfacing to cover the back of the design to stop any threads getting caught in use.

I found it much easier to use than waste canvas. I'll have to add my finished pics to my Flickr when I get a sec.
