Threading an ikea sewing machine?

Because BLW isn't just for lentil-weavers. Some of us like to piddle about with bits of felt and sticky-backed plastic as well.

Threading an ikea sewing machine?

Postby Singale » 23 Jun 2013, 10:06

Ok, before I give up & send the machine off to a charity shop, I'm hoping someone here might have an idea what I might be doing wrong...

This' my first time ever dealing with a sewing machine. Followed the instructions to get the thread in, looked at videos on youtube, made sure everything's in place, parts oiled, etc...

Yet everytime I put in the fabric & start to sew, the darned upper thread will break & get out of the needle!

So I'd end up with an un-sewn fabric, ca. 15cm broken off thread from the spool, the rest of the thread hanging useless-ly away from the needle & a long unwound thread from the bobbin below. Argh! Where have I gone wrong?

hmm, where exactly is the thread breaking? I've had problems with using cheap machine needles before theat turned out to have sharp edges inside the hole which cut the thread!

Is the tension right? I'm a bit of a beginner though, so I may be talking rubbish! I've sometimes had this problem and adjusting the tension seems to sort it out (as long as it's balanced with the bobbin tension).

yea, I'm suspecting it's a problem of a sharp inner part somewhere cutting the thread. It seemed to cut at about 15 - 20 cm length, which would mean about 5 cm in as I'd have about 15 cm length before I start out (as suggested by the manual)

I've played with the tension a bit & also made sure that the spool's moving freely. Didn't seem to help, though! :(

Is it cheap thread? I've had that problem before when I've tried to save money by buying cheap thread, ends up costing more in the long run as I then have to go and buy the good stuff :(

I did thought of that as well. Maybe it's the thread. Can't remember how much the thread cost, but it's definitely old! (As I've hardly ever sew except for the occasional fixes & darns now & then...)
Might go & look for a better quality thread to use, then before I give up...

If its old thread then definitely try new thread before giving up, it weakens over time.

yep, old thread, especially if it's been exposed to the light snaps v easily.

Back to proudly announce that I've figured out where I've gone wrong & am now happily shortening my trousers! Yay!
So I went & bought some new spools of thread (made sure they're marked as being "extra strong" ones. Then re-threaded the machine... Still broke off! Was ready to give up then thought of changing last step, namely the direction I put the thread into the needle, lower said needle to fabric, pressed the foot pedal... And it worked! Yaay! No more broken threads! Am so chuffed! :D

And a bit embarassed for not realising that the needle won't be rotating so of course the needle would be spearing & cutting the thread in its movements...

Yay, glad you sorted it! It's not a mistake I've made, but I wouldn't put it past me!!
