Painting chrome dining chairs...

Because BLW isn't just for lentil-weavers. Some of us like to piddle about with bits of felt and sticky-backed plastic as well.

Painting chrome dining chairs...

Postby Morlyte » 26 Mar 2013, 20:38

Has anyone ever repainted chrome chairs before? I have ordered a new wooden dining table (my old one was glass and metal with chrome chairs), however due to budget limits, there is no way I could afford new chairs as well so I am thinking of doing up my old chairs.

Im off to the fabric shop at the weekend to buy some oilcloth type stuff for the table cover and I will get some to cover the seat pats but wonder if I can paint my chrome chairs? Dp thinks it will be a nightmare because the paint has nothing to stick to and that it will be a pita to do because they have long, thin chrome spines as the back rest.

Anyone ever done it and am I better off just steam cleaning the metal?

I've never done it but if you go to a hardware store, the person in charge of the paint section should be able to advise you on a good paint for metal and how to prep in terms of sanding. I'd imagine you'd want to go the spray paint route as brushing on metal would be super fiddly and tends to look amatuer.

Never done it but would agree that spraying is probably the way forwards - maybe car paint?

I was thinking car paint too, its more the sanding and priming. Hmm maybe I will just steam clean the chrome lol. I had visions of beautiful cream coloured chairs.

Is there not a multi purpose primer out there that let's you paint on any surface? I'm sure I used it when I repainted my kitchen cabinets with melamine paint a few years ago. It was a red and white tin I think.

I think you should first focus on sanding and then think about painting.
Bring a metal sand paper and sand the metal surface, clean out rust, make it smooth.
After sanding you can apply paint on it with ease.
