wow they are amazing!!!! how did you get the gruffalo to stand up? I would love to know how you made her so that I can try and replicate the gruffalo!

You are all scaring me with this technical talk! FIL has commissioned me to make cake for MILs 60th party which is for about 50 people in a hotel. To date my most ambitios creations have been a fort and a ladybird with a less than professional finish (although they were very tasty if i say so myself). Any ideas or advice? I thought i might just go for 60 as i have done numbers before with hired tins. Each digit would be a sponge made with 5 eggs. Will that be enough cake? No clue what flavour to do. MIL and my mum collaborated to make our wedding cake which was lemon so i may use the same recipe. No idea how best to decorate. Party is in september so i think we will be eating a lot of cake over the summer holiday!

I'm so jealous of all you cake decorators! I would love to be able to do it. I love baking but usually just top with butter icing or icing sugar

I plan to attempt a proper cake for R's birthday this month. I'm thinking of doing a robot as he loves them and hopefully it will be easyish design to start me off.

If anyone has photos or tips for a robot cake it would be much appreciated.

My step-dad was 60 this week and mum wanted something nice to have with coffee after a posh meal but not cakey, so I made some macaroons with Italian meringue and the lot. I was really chuffed with how they turned out although would have liked more shine on the shells, any ideas? I sieved the almond/icing sugar mixture.

They were pink with white chocolate ganache and fresh raspberries.

I did dh a cake for tomorrow...as he is not here tonight and i havent got him a gift so I thought why not...besides BC has made this into a legitimate hobby now (thanks!). I made my first modelled person, apart from the baby obv. It looks more like Ross from friends than my dh but it looks ok...hope it holds up...I used spagetti but the sugar paste was v soft. Its a golf cake...endless possibilities.

I did a number one cake and it could take a range of quantities and get different thicknesses but I prefer them quite thick. I used 6 eggs in A's cake, iirc.

Most of my orders are form friends and family who would have asked anyway. The 80th and 21st were for a work friend who did pay but I was too scared to charge full price. The rainbow cake was my gift to a close friend for her birthday and the lego man is for my nephew. The babyshower cakes are a proper order but that is for SIL's work friend so just word of mouth.

Advertising wise, I've put flyers in all the local shops and schools and put stacks of business cards in a few random places. I'm going to offer the PTA at Scoot's new school a cupcake party to raffle and that's the lot for my plans TBH as I went and got a new job straight after resigning so I'll be just as hectic as ever asnd won't 'need' the extra income.

Don't be scared, your cakes are lovely! Go for it. xx

It's a really bad idea to look at the Flickr pics with your children anywhere near the laptop - I now have requests for gruffalo/piano/zebra cakes being chanted at me. I guess the girls approve!

Today I have made a trial of her Mr Funny cake for her to take to preschool tomorrow. Glad I did as I was going to do buttercream but changed it to fondant and think it looks better than buttercream would have done. Will put pics of the real thing on flickr at the weekend!

ahhhhh cake morning. Have just completed Darth Jr. Will put pic up. Pic isn't that good because our DSLR's battery has broken Am chuffed with it mostly because I did the whole thing really quickly. Which means more profit. Hurrah!
