Universal Log Ins - Secretconfessions & Craftswap

Postby realsLINshady » 30 Sep 2012, 18:25

We (Aitch and the mods) wanted to raise the issue of universal log ins - secretconfessions and craftswap being the two that immediately spring to mind.

Whilst these log ins were started with all good intent, we are having some grave concerns about the potential of misuse or, more seriously, as an alias that may have unintended consequences.

We have no desire to prevent anyone from creating an anonymous log on. However, if everyone who does require anonymity, is required to create their own personal anonymous log-in, there is still some trail back to that individual. This is really important as it is the only way we have to identify and prevent trolling - although , as yet, we have not experienced any of the worst kind of that on-line behaviour. Lets hope it stays that way - but communal log-ins do pose a threat in that way.

In addition, and this may be harder for some to feel comfortable with, in the event that an anonymous poster should ever indicate such serious issues as self-harm or worse, the ability for us as mods to try to reach them could be very important. Again, communal log-ins break that vital link.

We would like to disable those communal log ins to prevent them being used again. I am sure that we can find a work around solution for the craftswaps. However, giving the general spirit of inclusion on the forum, we didn't feel comfortable acting unilaterally. We welcome your views on this issue. (The final decision will ultimately rest with Aitch and the mod team and we hope you can understand that it won't be taken lightly or without due consideration of all views expressed here.)

I have had similar thoughts and agree with their withdrawal.

I agree that secretconfessions is being used for some serious stuff, which should be kept separate. There's a risk that someone posts something under sc, receives PMs of support while logged in, and then someone else logs in as sc and accesses those PMs. I know it sounds petty and unlikely, but the risk is that people see sc as private, where it really isn't

So, I agree - disable. As long as no-one is stopped from creating their own private ID when needed

I agree. I understand why SC has been used as of late, but I agree that it leaves he forum/aitch vulnerable.

I've never used either and have been meaning to ask for the password for sc for future use but I'm happy with whatever decision is made. I can see the danger of having universal log ins.

I agree.

Just a little plea though to anyone who is currently using the sc log-in to address some important things: please create a new ID so we can continue to support you. x

Completely agreed. The inability to contact the OP has always worried me.
