big holiday homes in Southern Europe

OK, this is a bit of a long shot, but we are planning a giant family get together next summer (2016). Could be about 26 of us, ranging in age from 1 - 78. We are converging from Brazil and Britain, and southern Europe has been suggested vaguely as a good place to go. Portugal and Sardinia have been mentioned specifically, but anywhere nice would be good! I started having a look, and it's just overwhelming so I just wondered if by any chance anyone had done something similar and had a great suggestion? It would be for a week, and ideally would have somewhere we could all sit down and eat together. Could be self catering, could possibly be a small hotel sort of thing. Ideally nice garden or things in immediate vicinity for the small people, combined with some culture / nice walks for the grandparents.
I await the responses which I know are about to come flooding in.
