Remind me what I need in my hospital bag

Postby Feefielou » 29 Jul 2015, 12:03

Yes, yes, I could look through old threads, but I am lazy, so let's resurrect the discussion. 36 weeks today. Last time Mademoiselle decided that 37 was enough for her, so I'm getting prepared early this time to avoid the last minute rushing around the house shoving stuff into a bag (probably a surefire way to make sure he will come two weeks late).

What do I need? Shiny fancy Swiss hospital so nursing pads, sanitary pads, basic toiletries, lanolin cream, couple of packs of disposable nappies already provided. Some kind soul gave us an H&M voucher so we got some cute new outfits yesterday to have something other than his big sister's hand-me-downs to come home in.

Have packed nightie, change of clothes, unspeakably gigantic nursing bras x2, and every bit of identification paperwork under the sun in the hope that we might actually get a birth certificate without spelling mistakes or major arguments this time.

What else?

Extra pairs of knickers, in addition to the change of clothes?

Snacks in case you're nursing and hungry at weird times. Entertainments in case you're nursing and awake at weird times.

Slippers, lip balm, and a big old water bottle. Bringing my own pillow was a blessing although I ended up sitting on it, mostly, to prevent the hinges of the mechanism on the hospital bed that let you sit it upright from digging into my tailbone during constant nursing. (Sorry, that is a hugely incomprehensible sentence but I couldn't figure out a better way to put it!) We also brought a portable iPod dock...

Water mister for spraying on your face- can't think what the proper term is, but was a random present from a friend that I really appreciated the first time round when the hospital was really hot.

Drinking straws, to make it easier to drink out if a cup if you're on all fours during labour. Slippers, dressing gown. Your coat (unless you're in a never ending heat wave?) which you almost certainly won't think of for the way there but might want on the way home?

Drinking straws and slippers would be my two must haves for sure!

Drinking straws, how clever! Thanks, there really is no rival to forum wisdom!

I took a 1 kg bar of chocolate. Second time around that was the best thing ever. First time round it was the nipple shields DH got me. Would've been nice to have had them before my nipples started bleeding. T didn't have tongue & lip ties that J had so I was one of those women who had no pain nursing second time around!

A kilogram of chocolate. That is pure genius. It's on the shopping list (oh, how convenient, I have a diplomatic price chocolate store in my office building... I see a 'starting maternity leave' present to myself in my near future).
