Gaining weight

I'm very fortunate here in Japan that I get a lot of care when pregnant. Off to the docs once a fortnight in the first 10 weeks or so, then once a month until the last 6 weeks or so when its back to fortnight or weekly. I get scans at every single appointment, which is awesome. Yesterday (13 weeks today) was the first time I had an ultrasound as well as an internal scan! So nice to see the baby wiggling around and all his / her parts.

However, Japan is the land of skinny women, and I am not! I'm a UK size 16, recently measured at 42F (haha, not a chance in hell in this country, going to have to get them online), 170cm ish and 85kg. Cue the weight lecture. It was done very nicely (the original hospital I went to for my first pregnancy told me to get on a diet as I was fat - I changed hospitals!) but I've been warned not to gain more than 5kg in the whole pregnancy. Last time I went from about 82 kg to 75 with morning sickness and then finished at 95, so I am a bit worried. I was 82 again when I left the hospital - baby plus placenta plus a lot of water retention coming out.

Does anyone have experience of not really gaining all that much? Are the hospital being overly precious as they have probably never dealt with someone my size before? How careful should I be? Is 5 kg realistic? I'm not interested in dieting while pregnant, but I don't want to put the baby at risk either. I'd appreciate any input / feedback / experiences.

I'm a size 18/20 and there is a Metabolic Clinic in Edinburgh which specialises in guiding and monitoring women with weight issues (under as well as over) through their pregnancy. They do extra checks for high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia indicators as well as having a dietician/nutritionist on hand. Their recommendation was not to gain any more than a stone throughout the pregnancy as it can make it more difficult to labour. However as I've probably got a 3 or 4 stone advantage on you already I can see that this is advice specific to me, not you. In the UK, I doubt you would have been referred to the Metabolic Clinic at a size 16. Not putting on any more than 5kg does seem a bit tough, but I certainly wouldn't worry about it. I didn't gain any more than a stone during each of my pregnancies but I did make an effort to eat mostly healthy stuff when the craving for chips and cheese wasn't too bad.

As you said, they are probably just not used to dealing with a curvy lady (I would kill to be a 16 again) where it's perfectly normal here in the UK.

Whatever you do though, don't diet!

Hey FC - by no means an expert but I have found this website useful as it gives you a target max/min and average for each week or so throughout pregnancy based on your starting BMI:

I like targets and I'm a bit compulsive, so it suits my personality to try to keep on track and weigh myself. I also have the ovia pregnancy app on my phone which gives you a weight gain target based on your starting BMI so similar to the website I linked to but with the ability to log your weight as you go along.

I started at 87kg, and at 32 weeks have gained 7kg... 1.8 of which was in the last 2 weeks. I started my pg with J at 68 kg and finished at about 90kg... so much less gain this time. I am a 40F so also a lot in my chest.

I am not too worried, and my doctor hasn't said anything - initial gain was slow... I will be higher than my BMI target, but I was on J as well, so I think part of it is that our bodies aim for what we need to grow our babies...

I haven't dieted, and in fact eat more sweets than I should, but I do drink water instead of sugary drinks (which I had more of with J) and try to keep balanced in my meals...

It sounds to me like they're being overly cautious. Surely at your weight dieting would be unnecessary during pregnancy? I would just continue as you are - I agree with VC that your body knows what it needs.

I barely gain weight when pregnant but that's because I have hyperemesis and lose a fair bit initially. I wouldn't recommend it lol!

I agree it sounds like they are being overly cautious.

Personally, I try not to focus too much on my weight while pregnant and try to just listen to my body and eat sensibly. If I'm hungry, I eat, but I try to make sure it is mostly healthy foods, plenty of fruits and veggies, protein, etc. (Although the overabundance of christmas cookies hasn't helped with this!) And of course trying to exercise a bit and stay active is good, although I'm having a harder time with that this time around since I seem three times as exhausted as I was last time!

What happened last time? I know now that I gain 2lbs a week no matter what I do. That's just how I make babies. I suspect my 9+ pounders might eat most Japanese babies though.
5kg would be entirely unrealistic for me. Can you refuse to be weighed?

My midwife didn't even weight me throughout. Only at the beginning and end. With harvey I put on two stone, with Jasper it was three. She said it was normal weight gain and nothing to be concerned by! I wouldn't worry about gaining too much, just try to eat normally. The only thing that upset me was that my 12 week scan was very grainy because of my weight. I felt quite disappointed with my photo because I was overweight and wished I wasn't.

Thanks, ladies. I don't think I can refuse to be weighed - the hospitals are all private clinics and I have to adhere to their rules, I guess, or go elsewhere. This place has evening appointments which is a huge help as my job are NOT HAPPY and would sack me for being pregnant if they could, so I want to go along with their rules (although I will be moving a month before my due date, so will go to the same place I had Aisha to have the baby - and they never ever mentioned my weight once! yay!)

I think I need to try to be more careful than I was last time and not eat junk - sadly when I am really queasy greasy foods settle my stomach or I'd eat nothing all day!

There still is an idea that the baby will be around 5lbs, as the ideal weight, which may be true for most Japanese people but I would doubt it for me!

Feel a bit reassured by your comments, I know I'm overweight but I don't see myself as massive and I was a bit depressed over it yesterday.

Laughing at the idea of a 5lb baby! J was 36w1d and 7lb3oz (they did check if he was large for dates...)

I am 32 weeks now and babycenter suggests baby is just she of 4 lbs... I imagine you will have some conflict due to the overall cultural differences...

I was also put off when I looked at the weight chart and realized I started as "obese" eek... but that just helped me to realise that I need to focus on being a bit more active after little bit arrives... I had a rough year between meds and back issues post car accident... did a little more sitting than average...

Yesterday I walked a half hour to my work to pick up my bicycle ( I had cycled in the morning but then it rained so I took the bus home; also home is entirely uphill!!) then cycled half an hour to Aisha's ballet class before cycling an hour or so home (the uphill bit slows me down, I had to get off and push - bearing in mind there was a 5 year old sitting on the back of it.) So at least I am doing some exercise although I daresay I will have to stop cycling soon enough.

Not dieting but made sure to eat carefully, no junk. Finally not puking at the thought of veg so can move away from the last few bread- based weeks.

You know, I did so much more regular exercise during my second pregnancy and it made such a difference. I'd be advocating exercise rather than dieting, and then eating as healthily as you can. I still put on about 14kg but I felt smaller. It was easier to move around and I didn't feel massive and awkward until probably about the last week or so.
Plus, maybe if you can show them positive, documented exercise results they might lay off nagging you about your weight?

Yeah, I think thats the thing. If it rains I will get the bus (because I can't get shoes in my size here, and don't have anything waterproof) but otherwise I will walk or cycle to work.

Just to say I feel your pain, "Soooo biiiiig", "You fat or baby fat?" etc... (I'm size 16, feel like I'm just about the same size as an elephant). You have to do what's right for you, for me staying fit for pregnancies two and three was so important, weight not so much. As it happened I didn't gain too much until the last few weeks either time, then I gained hugely. Biggish babies though (That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it).

Don't let them get to you. I've heard amazing stories about you fighting on your friends' behalf and telling doctors, psychiatrists, bosses, and all kinds of authority figures where to stuff it. ;) Don't let them bully you just because you're the actual patient this time! You're healthy and strong and they're paid to be obsessive and paranoid. (Remember these are the same people who say that you shouldn't pick up your older children or walk up stairs and you absolutely need that funny belt thing on EVERY DAY!!) And when the teeny tiny little midwife gets all shocked-looking at the scale, don't forget to remind her that you're also twice as tall as her. ;)

With Saurus, the month the morning sickness ended I got a scathing lecture from the midwife about gaining over 4 KG in a month, only to go in to the ultrasound and have the doctor tell me that Saurus had about three babies' worth of amniotic fluid in there. I almost asked her if I could go back and tell the midwife she was wrong! Whatever they tell you, don't let them talk you into obsessing over it. It sounds like they're being a bit extreme there, but it's not like they can do anything to you other than talk at you. If you want anybody to brainstorm a scathing letter with or something, I'll totally help you! :D (Although your DH is probably much better at being scary than I am, especially in Japanese. But I'll still totally help!)
