New baby - birth story

Postby bigcatmaniac » 17 May 2014, 21:30

Hi guys

Am finally getting a chance to write down some details. Not that baby has been too bad - but the house has been full of visitors and I've not had a moment's peace.

So it's a week already since my waters broke. They went at lunchtime while I was hanging out the washing but I wasn't certain as I'd had a bath that morning, and there was no sound or popping sensation. I went into the assessment unit that night as nothing had happened and they confirmed that my waters had gone.

Still no contractions overnight so I was called in for an induction. I reacted really badly to the induction with my first so I really wasn't keen but we went ahead with the Propess as there was nothing happening naturally and it had been 24 hours since my waters had gone. Contractions started straight away and I immediately felt sick again. After a few hours (and bouts of sickness) I was 2 cms as they took the Propess out. Thankfully the contractions continued normally on their own, the baby wasn't distressed and the sickness eased. I got some gas and air then when I felt better. I seemed to get to 5cms quite quickly after that and I was moved up to the delivery suite at about midnight. Everything sped up again - by 3am I was at 10 cms and so I was able to push. No time for any other pain relief by then. LO arrived at 4am on the dot.

I was so delighted to have got the VBAC I wanted. Right at the end the baby started to show signs of distress and the doctors rushed in and wanted to take me to theatre but the two midwives convinced them to give me a few more contractions as I was nearly there - and she arrived on her own. Way hey! She had the cord loosely round her neck so it took an extra few seconds and a few puffs of oxygen to get her going, but all was well.

The only spanner in the works was that my placenta wouldn't come away. They didn't want to tug too hard because of my section scar and because I only had gas and air, so I ended up having a spinal and going to theatre to have it removed. I took a bit of a funny turn in theatre as the spinal didn't kill all the pain so I had this other quick acting painkiller through my IV which sent me a bit loopy for a while. I had to stay in another night cos of the spinal and the waters going as I was on IV antibiotics but I've been home since Tuesday lunchtime and everything is going really well.

She's feeding like a trouper - only dropped 2% from birthweight at 72 hours and already weighs more than her birth weight. She seems to be a very efficient feeder too - max 20 mins on the breast at a time so that's handy when I'm trying to juggle two. Things going ok with my older toddler too - she's 20 months and so didn't really understand what was happening for the first couple of days. Has gone to hug / kiss newbie rather enthusiastically so far but has been ok with me feeding and nursing her to be honest. Looking forward to a few days with just the 4 of us now all the grandparents have departed.

Hoping the carpal tunnel and oedema eases off soon too. It's so nice to be able to sleep on my back again - although my swollen boobs are getting in the way of tummy sleeping at the moment. I had a whole Camembert for lunch too! Yum!!

Off to bed before the next feed!

Congrats BCM! So glad your VBAC worked out, it's a shame you didn't feel well after the other painkillers but glad you got home safely. Glad baby is feeding well and you sound like you are managing brilliantly with a baby and toddler ((()))

Woo congratulations and welcome to the world baby.

So pleased to hear that most things went as you wanted. And also glad to hear that your 20month old toddler is coping well too. There'll be 20 months between G and D, gives me hope lol.

Enjoy your family time and newborn snuggles, so glad to heat things sounds to be going well for you.
