What's a healthy weight to put on during pg?

Postby Biddy » 13 Apr 2014, 18:17

I've already put on 15kg (roughly 2.5 stones) and I'm only 18 weeks. That seems excessive?? I have been eating a bit too much junk lately which I've resolved to stop. It's no more than what I'd binge on when I'm not pregnant and I might only put on 5 pounds afterwards. But I guess with pregnancy the weight stays on.

What's a normal weight gain throughout a whole pregnancy so I can put it into perspective?

They don't weigh women during pregnancy in this country because it doesn't really matter. My sil was weighed constantly in Belgium.and ended up feeling really crappy about herself. I asked here why they don't weigh and was told that for most the weight only matters in terms of losing it after so there's.no need to weigh or worry.

With Harvey and Pippa I put on 2 stone and my midwife said that was fine. With Jasper it was three stone and she didn't comment but I still felt I was within normal realms. I know the more overweight you are the less they like you to put on but I have never known anyone told to be cautious about what they eat.

I put on 3 stone with Squeak - 2 stone of it in the first trimester. Someone from the hospital did phone me to query the weight that was recorded in my notes, as they felt there must have been a mistake as I couldn't have out that much on(!) but eating - mostly crisps and chocolate  - was the only way to control the nausea at the beginning.

I think I was told to gain 20-25 lbs. I gained around 30-35 and no one ever commented or said it was too much. High weight gain can lead to a bigger birth weight for baby, I don't remember if it is linked to them having a higher chance of diabetes / heart disease / etc. though I think I may have heard that somewhere. And obviously the more you put on the more you will have to lose afterwards.

I was told 12-15kg was an ideal gain, I gained 25kg. I lost 38kg after her birth, so it's not something I'd worry about again!

I was a stone over my goal weight when I got pregnant with TheWriggler. I put on 2 stone. I was at goal weight when I got pregnant with TheBean and I put on 3 stone. I concluded that goal+3st is just what I weigh at the end of pregnancies. (These weights are comparing non-pregnant me before conception and after the births iyswim. I didn't weigh myself during pregnancy ever. But I knew I had put on more with TheBean)

I gained 45lb during P's pregnancy and 35lbs during R's. I feel that trusting what my body wants during pregnancy is a good policy and had no trouble losing the weight either time.

I put on 2-2.5 stone this time which wss a bit more than the previous 2. I ate pretty much whatever I wanted. I have just started weight watchers to try to lose the last stone as I can't get lots of my normal clothes in yet and I am not buying new ones!

I put on 40 lbs both times (and lots of it early on). The second time around the doctor sort of mentioned that 25 lbs would be ideal, but I basically eat non-stop for the first 5 months to keep the nausea at bay, so I just smiled, nodded and ignored when he said that. Both times I've lost 50 lbs before baby's first birthday (I attribute that to BFing). They do weigh here, but I've always assumed it's more to catch a weight gain that is too low (signalling potential issue with the baby) than to catch it if it's too high.

I put on 60lbs last time. 1.5lbs a week, no matter what I ate.i freaked out at the start of the 2nd trimester and watched what I ate meticulously for about a month. Still 1.5lbs a week. So I gave up.
With T? No idea. Probably about the same. No one weighed me. Ever.
With A, I was 40lbs down within a few weeks. Certainly by my 6 week appt.
I think my body just stores fat to produce milk. For the giant babies it makes...

I‘ve put on 1 1/2 stone so far (I‘m 25 weeks) and I have no idea if that‘s "good" or "bad". I‘m grazing all day and trying to be healthy but often I just crave fat, salt and sugar, so I‘m going with it.

Ok that's all very reassuring. I was feeling guilty that I haven't been looking after myself. And I was eating a lot during the first trimester to get rid of nausea and that horrible ravenously hungry feeling. I will try to eat more healthily but I will also try not to think about the weight. Oh dear, does this mean I'm going to have a giant baby? Well, at least it will be a lovely squishy bubs then :bsmile

Just to be different I didn't put in huge amount of weight with the last 2, despite just wanting crisps etc at the beginning! With dd I was worried how static my weight was but the rest of me seemed to slim down as the bump grew. No need for concern as I still had giant babies! Slightly concerned about the size of this one I have to say :s
