Mouth ulcers

Postby Biddy » 23 Feb 2014, 09:33

I forgot about this particular delight. I can't remember what I used previously but I seem to remember it didn't work. At the moment I have 4 ulcers on my tongue and they're so irritating. Is there a product anyone can recommend that actually works to get rid of them or soothe them?

Clove oil helps but it tastes vile. Rinsing with salt water is also supposed to help.

I think it can be a vitamin deficiency - for me I swear by marmite, they usually clear up if I up my marmite on toast consumption! I know other people find other foods help.

Unfortunately clove oil is not advised in pregnancy. And marmite is my worst enemy right now puke puke! I always get loads of them when I'm pregnant and I've been told by various midwives it's due to hormones rather than a vitamin deficiency?

I suffer badly from ulcers all of the time. Boots do a 'pen' that applies a gel that really does numb them for a good long time and seems to speed healing. No idea if it's pregnancy friendly though.

Thanks PM but I just looked at the product details and it says do not use while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Corsodyl - aha, I remember that was one that might have worked when I was pg with S. But I think I'll get the gel rather than the mouthwash as the mouthwash can stain your teeth according to my dentist.

Will try to get to a pharmacy this week, thanks.

I usually rinse with Corsodyl or other clorhexidine mouthwash for a few days, then "wash" the actual ulcers with some mouthwash on a cotton bud until they go away. It doesn't stain your teeth if you brush them thoroughly first and then wait a few min. before the mouthwash use. If you're really worried, just washing the affected areas seems to work too, as long as your brushing and flossing is good in addition.

Another recommendation for corsodyl - brushing first definitely helps prevent staining. I always get ulcers around the time of my period as well as when pregnant so there is definitely a hormonal link.

I hope they get better soon!
