How do you start a blog?

Postby AwayinaChive » 01 Feb 2012, 17:25

Once in a while I feel like starting a blog. Mostly short entries with a photo or 2 and a short description, of an activity we did that day. And mostly to motivate me to do creative activities, so I have something to put on the blog! Because lately all I feel like doing is sitting around getting annoyed when the kids get bored. I used to always have great ideas planned for every day, and spend time looking for ideas on Pinterest. Since the advent calendar ended we don't do much.....bad mummy. Sometimes when we do something really nice I get all excited and want to take photos and show someone! I could stick it on a blog. Plus I can look back when dd2 is older at what I did with dd1, and get ideas of what to do! And maybe people will read it but whatever.

So all I know is some people seem to use blogspot. I had a look there and there are a few templates to choose from, simple, watermark, photo or something..... That is the extent of my knowledge of blogging! So, is blogspot good to use?

Personally I use Wordpress and find it more user friendly than blogspot to read.

Sign up and have a go, it's the only way to learn!

Cool, can I see your blog? To see how it looks? So far it looks harder, I have to download stuff! <lazy me>

I might have to delete this again afterwards as I've had all sorts of trouble with this site showing up on searches for my co. name but:

http://thecornflowercakecompany.wordpress.com

It isn't really a proper blog in the traditional sense - Kate's is better for that. Mine is in lieu of a company website.

FWIW blogspot is impossible to comment on from an iPhone.

I use blogspot, it's pretty idiot-proof and does everything I want it to. I set it up in about three seconds flat and it's easy to customise and do whatever you want with it.

Enjoy!

Another wordpresser here (although sadly infrequent blogger at present). I just looked through all the blogs I read and thought that ones I preferred the style of were mostly wordpress or typepad. And you have to pay for the decent typepad one. So choice made! You can make your blog private only until you're happy with the look of it if you feel shy about starting up

We use blogger - the recent improvements have made it easier to post, and change settings etc. but loading pictures can still take an *age*. But it works for us - we're not after loads of traffic, and the only person who comments is DH's brother. But it's read by a lot of friends and family and that's what it's for :)

Hmmm, just started one in wordpress and don't like how the header is so huge you have to scroll down to read anything. I've noticed that in other blogs and always wondered why the heck the person had such an annoyingly big header, I guess you have no choice?

Except looking at some of yours, your headers are a nice size. I guess I need to play around with it.

Different "themes" have different lay outs and different sized headers. I chose my theme for the header shape/size and the fact that you can put your own photo there. I have since realised my theme is one of the all-time faves in wordpress, so I see it about a lot!

Once you've added a bit of content to your proto-blog you can apply different themes in turn to see how it looks. Although with personal photos in the header you may want to crop them differently in advance to get the look you're after. It is lots of fun!
